Meet Carlos Solis of Contrapunto in Kennesaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Solis.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Carlos. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The idea of Contrapunto started in 2008. The art scenery in Atlanta, in my opinion, was lacking of Latino presence at the time. Few Latin Artists were given the opportunity to exhibit their work in the main galleries. It was disconcerting and disappointing, not only to witness this but also in realizing how so few people knew about well renounce Latin American art in general. I felt compelled and inspired to start something, a group of contemporary Latin American artists. I wanted variety and uniqueness as well a positive attitude from the artists.

Has it been a smooth road?
Today, I feel that I have accomplished just that. I have gathered a small yet strong group of very talented artists from Peru, Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela. We have been successfully showing in galleries, museums, theaters and universities in several cities across the United States. These artists and Maestros are Pedro Fuertes (Peru), Jorge Arcos (Mexico), Graciela Nunes-Bedoya (Peru), Dora Lopez (Peru), Catalina Gomez (Colombia) and Myself, Carlos Solis (Venezuela.)

However, nothing comes easy. We have to work very hard to get accepted and still we face some resistance to be include in some areas of Atlanta art community. Not to mention, the southerner mindset towards Latinos in general. But that is the reason I created all this to break stereotypes and build a bridge. There is a lot of work to be done but as long I feel passion and determination, I’m willing to go as far as I can to achieve my dreams and goals.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Contrapunto. story. Tell us more about the business.
Besides being a full-time Artist, I’m in charge of marketing, promotion and curation of our exhibits. My specialty is to create and work with new ideas for my artwork and also to bring to light a unique and new perspective of Latino culture. As a result of our hard work, we have been very successful to being recognize and embrace by the community. I have been working with companies, such as CocaCola, UPS, Sun Trust Bank, and others as a curator/artist. As an artist and founder of a group, we also had worked with Museums, Art Centers, and galleries in Atlanta, New Mexico, NY, Chicago, Alabama and Pennsylvania. I have done solo shows also but my main objective is to promote Latin American Art in the USA.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I believe Atlanta is getting better and improving. The demographic shift is increase which is the perfect condition for groups like us to be more in demand and accepted. Subsequently, will expand our market and increase the opportunities not only for me and my group but for many others with similar goals.
