Meet Carlton Mason of 1yvisuals Photography in Union City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlton Mason.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I didn’t start with a camera how everyone thinks I did. However, I got my first phone and of course back then a flip phone it was. I wasn’t really interested in making calls or texting, I were more interested in figuring out how to record and take picture so on the phone. Once I figured out how to take pictures and things, I convinced my mom to create a YouTube channel for me all at the age of around nine. The channel didn’t have a lot of content or anything, just me talking and playing pretend “Hi guys welcome back…” Fast forward, I picked up my first camera when was around the age of ten. My cousin bought me the camera for my birthday as I was using the camera for the first time I realized that it had all the bells and whistles it was waterproof, Flash, and Usb port. I didn’t get serious with the camera until around 6th grade back when I had audiovisual class and theater. If you were to look at any of those old pictures and videos, you would not find me in many.

I found myself behind the camera more than anyone. Fast forward again now to high school where I still managed to be in audiovisual classes again behind the camera. I didn’t get serious and found a passion for it until I got to hold off one of my family members DSLR at a family function when I was 12 going on 13. I didn’t know much of what I was doing clicking and turning knobs. There are different types of photographers in the photography industry like nature, weather, there are many types. However, found my niche in portrait photography. Not too long ago, I started my first modeling team known as “#JUNESMODELINGTEAM” its comprised of 20 beautiful ladies in which I work with them to test new techniques and scenes and themes that I have developed, or me and them have collabed on. The ultimate goal is to CREATE CREATE CREATE and put great minds together. I also work with an artist name Young Deion who is based in ATL, I started taking pictures of him while in the studio and then got to traveling and moving those experiences help me gain some industry knowledge.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I can say it has been smooth thus far, however there were some bumps such as figuring out how to pay for equipment and extra camera bodies and things in that nature. One main struggle was finding studio space for my portrait photography work. I went from clearing my bedroom out to shooting in it. To shooting in a studio that gives me great results with more space for creativity. another struggle was losing clients due to productive value. “Would it be worth spending my money with you”. I later got everything in a row. Learned my camera and connected with it to its fullest. And not just being someone that has camera and doesn’t know what to do with it.

It went back smooth as my work started to speak for itself, I started picking up a lot of clients on top of constantly shooting with my modeling team.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My company is “1yvisuals Photography”, I specialize in portrait photography. I’m most known for being the dude that wants to shoot every weekend and any free time I have even if it was with the same client that had payed already and I’d ask them do you have another outfit. I wanted to try new things and push content out on my Instagram to get people’s feedback which was most important to me. “What do you think about this portrait”.

I’m most proud of the place I started at to where I am now its a blessing, and all the man hours and YouTube videos and workshops. I thanks the man above, I now have repeat clients and prom, graduation shoots, all-natural and maternity shoots and many more. What sets me apart from others is the repetition, people may call me weird but to practice I’ve shot manicans to help figure out lighting positions and figuring out where light falls when I click that shutter button on my camera.

What were you like growing up?
I lived a normal life I’ve traveled already. I’ve done some of the things I’ve wanted to do so far. I couldn’t have done without my ma dukes in which she gave me some courage to keep going even though it was hard. I was most interested in technology and computers and still are but I use photography as my escape of life it brings me joy and I get to meet new people. I have a second passion for cars my family owns two body shops so and was raised around them, cars have never left my heart and brain and they never will.
