Meet Chad Ross of Blackkimchii

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Ross.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Chad. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
About seven years ago, I was introduced to designer, Shaka King, by a mutual friend who worked at Jezebel Magazine. I did my first professional shoot with him, which ended up a cover and four pages spread in Obvious Magazine’s Fashion Edition. Since then, I’ve continued working with Shaka, who has become both a mentor and father figure. I also lived in New York for about five years where I worked at the corporate offices for Saks and Tiffany’s, as well as, attending fashion presentations, styling a show for NYFW and meeting celebrities through one of my now bff Saleam Singleton. I’m now focusing on Blackkimchii, which is an organic, cathartic creative project for me; exploring and expanding that comprehensively.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey in fashion has not been easy. I’ve done music videos, which had workdays of 14-16 hrs and never gotten paid. People have damaged or stolen lended garments and pieces without willingness to compensate or not gotten credits or content from projects. Aside from normal things such as: tardiness, lack of preparation and organization.

Please tell us about Blackkimchii.
Blackkimchii – is a creative brand that ranges in services from creative directing to styling. I’m known for my ability to compose looks and evoke an emotion or mood through a photo. I’m most proud of the acknowledgment and recognition I’ve received from prominent people in both the fashion and art industries, as well as people that have randomly contacted me to let me know I inspire them through my art. I feel what most sets me apart is that my content isn’t contrived but fully of and from me; what I create and show is truly ME.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel what has been my key to success or continued growth is my willingness to be transparent and sincere in what I create.
