Today we’d like to introduce you to Chaz-London “DJ London” Boards.
Chaz-London “DJ London”, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
From a young age, I was always intrigued by the music of all genres and different time periods. Of course, it stemmed from a consumers standpoint or just enjoyment but at some point, you realize I like music more than most I should do something more than just waiting on my favorite artist to release something. I can remember as a little elementary kid sitting in the car while my mom was shopping at the grocery store or getting her hair done listening to mix shows on V-103 wondering how is he mixing this song into another and it sounds so smooth. One time, I got a napkin and wrote down every song transition to go home and pull up two tabs on YouTube and try to do the same thing… obviously, it didn’t work… but I believe that was the beginning of my DJ career, lol.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing worth anything is necessarily smooth in my opinion. It is a pure passion that pushes people forward. I tried a lot of things with music… God forbids it to resurface, but my best friend (Austin Crute) and I would make songs in like a fifth grade that are laughable looking back. He was and is good (He is still an artist) and I was just on the track because I was his friend. Though trying to rap and trying to produce at a young age, I eventually found DJing. I was bought a small mix track pro when I was like 13 and did not know what I was doing at all. I YouTubed tutorials and learned a bit here and there but I went YEARSSSSSS of never being booked. My first DJ booking was at my mom’s elementary school for a celebration for well-behaved kids… my second was my sister’s wedding because I was a free DJ and you know black people always trying to save money, lol. So, from elementary good behavior parties to touring… God has been good enough to let me advance and take a few forward steps with this career
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
So, I am a DJ, of course… I specialize in not just playing or mixing music but allowing whoever is in the room to forget about their problems for however long I am on the turntables. What sets me apart from others is probably my music history depth. When listening to old music, my mom used to “this is when music was really music” granite and I think the music now is hard but having a diverse ear that has heard music from all genres and time periods helps me to distinguish between what records can be a hit and which ones I feel confident enough to break. Also, I’m a clown so on the mic or at shows, I don’t know what I’ll do or say.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is probably driving to Kentucky to see my grandparents with my mom dad and sister and listening to this old CD that my dad would play and my whole family would sing Summer Rain by Carl Thomas. Moments like these can not be replaced.
