Meet Christina Waters of MyTris Consulting in Lawrenceville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Waters.

Christina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Christina Waters (Chrissy). I am originally from Savannah, GA and currently reside in Metro Atlanta. My love for science began in the eleventh grade at the illustrious A.E. Beach High School. I had an amazing teacher, Mr. Lambert, who not only made a difficult subject easy to understand but also made it fun and cool. The blurry Polaroid you see is of Mr. Lambert and me when I won the Chemistry Student of the Year in 1999. I’m very passionate about the STEM field, networking, and working with other STEM professionals. I often get asked about how I started my STEM career and navigated to where I am today as a Food Chemist for the Food and Drug Administration. After spending countless hours of speaking about my experiences and offering advice to colleagues and other young professionals, I developed the idea for MyTris Consulting LLC.

I have a unique perspective and compassion for the needs of emerging STEM professionals having also personally experienced the frustrations of looking and applying for opportunities, networking; while managing family, education, and work obligations simultaneously. I received A LOT of noes before I started to get yeses. In addition to my technical skills, I’ve also served on hiring committees where I learned the most effective resume writing skills and interview techniques for STEM professionals.

In addition to my work as a full-time chemist, I am a full-time wife to my high school sweetheart and full-time mommy to Myah and Tristan. As an emblem of how central my family is to my professional and personal growth, MyTris Consulting LLC is a combination of my kids’ names. They are my biggest motivation in building a brand that they can one day contribute to.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. I’ve had my share of struggles in my career and life in general. Early in my career, one of my greatest obstacles was finding opportunities that matched my skill set and passion. I was well aware of what I had to offer, however, I had a hard time finding the opportunities. However, that all changed when I was introduced to a young lady who worked at CDC. We met at a mutual friend’s birthday party and we instantly connected and began to talk and share stories. When I mentioned my desire to work at CDC, she informed that she worked there and that if she saw any positions, she would forward them to me. We met in November of 2009, and she contacted me in January 2010 about a position. She put me in direct contact with the hiring personnel, I got an interview, and the rest is history. This situation is a major reason why I do what I do in my STEM Career Consulting business and my desire to continue to pay it forward.

MyTris Consulting – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The name of my business is MyTris Consulting LLC. I help STEM students and professionals start, grow, and thrive in their STEM career. I am known for my down to earth, caring personality, mixed with an analytical mindset and tenacious drive to see others around me succeed. I have a unique perspective because I am a black woman in STEM who has been through many of the obstacles my peers and counterparts will experience in the STEM industry, particularly women and minorities. I am most proud of helping STEM students navigate through the STEM industry and find a career that speaks to their passion and skill set. I’m also extremely proud of the students who I’ve mentored over the years who have come back to me as clients. The work I do with MyTris Consulting LLC truly sets my soul on fire.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far was actually starting MyTris Consulting. It has been a passion project years in the making. In April 2019, I finally made the decision to let faith overcome my fear and I began preparation of starting the business. I officially launched the business on November 1, 2019.
