Today we’d like to introduce you to Connor Quinn-Ray.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m from a small town, Sleepy Hollow, outside of New York City. I was always interested in music since I was a young kid, but my journey really started when I got the Ableton Push along with the software to use it with when I was 14. Having the professional tools at my disposal with little instruction meant that I had to learn the software myself over two years and develop a unique sound in my beats. After I mastered producing, I realized that I had a message and a voice, so I started rapping. I’m building my brand and am ready to expand from SoundCloud and my local community to the nation and the world, which I’m starting with my debut studio project IN PROGRESS, coming early next year.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
From the outside, I used to look like an average white kid who you never thought would rap or even make beats, so I would always get dismissed by people as an experimental artist who wouldn’t get anywhere. Thankfully, since I’ve become more nationwide in my connections, I realize there’s a space for me that isn’t filled yet in the industry. Even with this new confidence, though, I still run into the music industry’s usual tricks. I’ve produced for artists with the biggest egos, craziest feuds, and worst mental states possible in the past two years, but I’ve enjoyed it all and want to change the world nonetheless.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My artist name is CHANGE, which came organically from my high school years where I always had a different style or outlook on life every few weeks. Now the name to me means that when I eventually land in the industry full-time, my music will change the industry itself. Even though the rap scene is honestly too crowded right now, my unique energy will bring new faces into the scene. I make beats that can either be the life of the party or the serene escape from it, and the same goes for my rapping as well.
I eventually want to bring this aesthetic to the world beyond music. Some of my ambitions include building modern entertainment centers, developing fashion, and working with people like Elon Musk to merge creativity and technology. For now, though, I’m gonna stick to what I know which is undoubtedly my unique brand of rap music.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I always look to the future at all times. I don’t dwell on past things too much unless I’m writing music about it. This gives me insight on what the next wave could be in music so I can adopt it or help other artists express it using my beats. It’s this and my persistence in the industry that I think are most essential to my success.
