Meet Corey Grimes, Coragee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Grimes.

Corey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started making beats as a freshman in high school. I downloaded a copy of FL Studio (the demo version), and I was immediately immersed in the world of music-making. I have always been an entertainer of sorts. I was the class clown in elementary and middle school, and I would make parody raps out of popular songs that were out at the time. My love and fascination have always been pure, and I would notice little details, such as how certain instruments added a FEELING when composed a certain way.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No not at all. A lot of struggle in terms of my music career came from self. There were times where I didn’t believe in what I was doing and, as a result, would commit self-sabotage without even trying. I felt like my beats were too different, and the songs that I wrote no one would want to hear. I also put a stop to many things that could have been great for me, had I believed I deserved such opportunities. Other struggles came from financial hardships. I once had to sell all of my studio equipment to pay rent… yea.. those days were not my brightest!

I have been through six or seven laptops during the course of my career (and the one I have currently is on its last leg come to think of it!) The first two just quit working on me one day, one of them got stolen after I forgot to attach an itinerary label to a suitcase they were in at the Greyhound terminal in Atlanta (to this day, I always keep my laptop on me during travel for this very reason!). The others just ran their course, and I had to upgrade to something with more power and ability to handle what I was throwing at it. Overall, my struggles seemed to have made my love for music even stronger and have made me a more resilient person as a whole.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Coragee (pronounced co-RAH-jee) is literally a fusion of my first, middle, and last name (I ain’t finna give y’all my full government! LOL). I liked how it sounded, and it has stuck with me ever since. I specialize in music production and songwriting, and people may know me for being a show producer and former intern at Patchwerk Studios..man! Those were some great times!

I am most proud of finding my tribe of people that I can work with. I finally feel like I have linked up with other souls that understand exactly what I am trying to say musically, and isn’t trying to change me or mold me into what’s considered hot and trendy. As much as it pains me to say it, me attempting to copy the sound that is “hot right now” takes a lot more effort for me than I am willing to admit! It just doesn’t come that natural for me.

What sets me apart from others is my ethereal sound selection choices and colorful melodies. I love melodies, and I love feeling like each element of a track is helping to tell the overall story. As far as my songwriting, I love putting wit and humor into lyrics. It adds a clever, tongue-in-cheek moment to a song, and I live for those!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I have a couple of projects coming up with other local artists that I am very excited about! I can’t say too much out of respect for the other parties and their release dates, just know that it’s gonna be epic!

COVID-19 may have slowed things down for a bit, but it hasn’t slowed down the internet! With that being said, I plan on releasing a lot more content and would love to collaborate with other songwriters and producers as well.

OH! And My debut single is coming up in the late fall, early winter of this year. It’s called “Involved,” and I can’t wait for the world to hear it! It’s about finding your own self-worth through putting someone else on a pedestal, only to realize that they are just as flawed as you are, and you should give yourself more credit!
