Meet Curtis Pilgreen of CURTECH in Tyrone

Today we’d like to introduce you to Curtis Pilgreen.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Curtis. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I can remember as a young one being interested in electronics, space and chemistry. After High School, our family moved to Georgia. I held several fast-food and corner retail cashier jobs. Some of them I worked at the same time. My favorite job was as junior chemistry at an industrial plant within walking distance of our home. Within a few years, I decided to join the military. I finished second in my military instructional assigned class and was granted the opportunity to pick my first location to begin my tour of duty. I always loved the sun and the beach, so I chose sun-kissed Pensacola, Florida. That was the home of the fast flying Blue Angels. After several years in and a few changes in duty stations, I chose my last location which landed me in Washington, DC. My last year I was assigned to oversee a network server and that’s when it all began. Once I left the military, I began working at Lockheed Martin Mission Systems in Gaithersburg, Md. I was assigned to the Process Improvement Team and held the title Advanced PC Specialist. A few years later, I left Lockheed and moved back to Atlanta. I almost immediately began working for “Big Blue”, through a recruiting agency. I was an IBMer. A year later a promotional opportunity presented itself and I was called to Fulton County main IT Department as a Swat Antivirus Team Member. Best I can describe it is, we went around the county swatting viruses. I made a few departmental promotional changes and finally landed a position that I stuck with for over 12 years. When you land a corner office, get the use of the department assigned vehicle and lunch often with the boss, you seem to settle in. I was settled, but not satisfied. Just watching the vendors sit across the table from me and me helping them get contracts and deals stirred up a fire in me. As each vendor came in, I told myself, one day I want to be on the other side of the table. So now, here I am. I am that registered vendor, I am ready to work. I am ready to provide support and service. I am CURTECH “A Technology Company!”

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a very smooth transition. Opening a brick and mortar business on your own, by yourself, that is not a franchise, takes courage and strength.

Some of the basic struggles I encountered were:

1. Finding a good location at the right price.
2. Researching and finding the right vendors to use for your goods and services.
3. Waiting for your storefront signage.
4. Trying to dot all of your “I’s” and cross all of your “T’s” which is never ending.
5. Even to today, finding the time to do your pertinent running around and keeping your doors open to the public
