Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Gooden.
Cynthia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My photography journey began in 2014. I started as an event photographer and interned with Jackson State’s University Communications department as a student photographer for my four years there. I wasn’t able to explore my creativity while trying to balance work, school and photography. After graduating in 2019, I began working in photography studios in Mississippi called The Murals and Vibe Studio. The fellow photographers there helped me learn studio photography and lighting equipment, which I automatically fell in love with.
The creative community in Mississippi helped me a lot with my creativity and confidence as a photographer. I would not exactly label the kind of photographer I am. I just enjoy making people feel good about themselves, even if it is just for an hour. I want my clients to feel as comfortable as possible as if they were hanging with their best friend. I moved to Georgia to explore new opportunities for my career. I am here to connect with new models and photographers to expand my business. This can be a great opportunity for me. It is all up to me how I use my resources now to better myself and my career.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been times where I have doubted myself. Of course, no photographer has all the skills when they first start. It’s a learn as you go experience.
Please tell us about your business.
I am a freelance photographer that specializes in portraits, conceptual art, and visuals. I am mostly known for my portraits and my concept titled “The Black Woman Aesthetic”. I recently held my very first showcase for that concept. What sets me apart from other photographers is the experience during the shoot. I like to make sure my client is 100% comfortable that way, I can capture their authentic selves. The more comfortable they are, the easier it is for them to pose.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Atlanta is full of opportunities. It is all about how you utilize your resources. The creatives here have also helped connect me with studios and people to work with. The only thing I do not like about the city is the traffic. I believe that is a lot of people’s dislike though.
