Meet Dana Scott of DMS Creative Solutions in Fayetteville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Scott.

Dana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for photography began as a high school student serving as the primary photographer for the yearbook staff and shooting professional wrestling at Ted Turner’s channel 17 (pre-CNN).

I originally majored in art with an emphasis on photography at Georgia State University. However, I changed my major due to the limited number of “photography” related classes offered at the time. I continued to shoot film photography, processing b&w film and printed my own b&w images until the mid-90s. In early 2000, I started shooting again when digital photography become affordable at the consumer level. I continued to improve my skills with digital photography and became active in several photography clubs.

I started Dana Scott Photography in 2012 and began shooting semi-professionally with a permanent studio in the basement of my home. I also began taking leadership roles in three of the photography clubs I belong to. I currently serve as the President of the Fayette Photographic Society with 231 members and The Creative Photo Den with 106+ members. I also serve as a co-organizer with the Peachtree City Photography club.

In 2016, I decided to realize my dream of opening up my own photography studio and training center called DMS Creative Solutions. We specialize in studio rental, training, portraits, weddings, commercial, seniors, headshots, events and fine art photography.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I opened the studio while I was still employed full-time in corporate America. I did not advertise due to my full-time status, so my studio work was conducted in the evenings and weekends. I received work via word of mouth and conducted training primarily with the various Fayette County photography club members.

I went full-time with the studio in January of 2017. The biggest struggle has been marketing effectively with a tight budget. Customers come in and talk about how nice the studio is and my combination of studio work, events, training and fine art sales is a great concept. But they did not know I was here. So, the biggest challenge is marketing to attract the kind of customers who appreciate and want great photography in the Fayette County area and metro Atlanta at large.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory as it relates to photography was shooting professional wrestling at Ted Turner’s channel 17 on Saturday mornings for taping of the NWA matches. I would go the following weekend and sell photos of the wrestlers I had taken. That was the beginning of my entrepreneurial spirit and love of photography at age 15.
