Meet David Askew Jr. of Fly Hippie in Riverdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Askew Jr.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since I could remember as a kid, I was always drawing something. One of my favorite past times was drawing and tracing comic book images. Despite my love for art at an early age, my start actually began while in high school. I would draw on shirts, shoes, and hats, you name it. Whatever I could put graffiti on, I’d put my tag on it. Throughout the years, I would draw tattoos for people who had crazy ideas.

I graduated and later went to ITT Tech for graphic design, but the school foreclosed and I got caught up with working and providing for my then-newborn daughter. Although I worked and was a new father, I would still dabble in art during my free time. One day, my coworker took notice of my work and introduced me to a cool dude named Toro. He took me under his wing and introduced me to the world of printing on clothing as well as showing me another side of graphic design.

From there, I decided to create my own clothing line called Fly Hippie. The idea actually collaborated with my 2 younger brothers and me. The more I designed, the memory of my aunt and I sitting and coloring kept replaying in my head. She would tell me: ‘It’s ok to be different and creative, just use your imagination.” And that’s exactly what I did. Realizing that designing is my true passion; I decided to branch off and create a separate company called Fly Image to cater to my clientele. Fly Image is a company that takes your idea and makes it a reality. I provide graphic design and a wide variety of print/embroidery services. I’ve worked with some pretty cool established businesses as well as some awesome up and coming businesses; Holy Trend, Level 3 Salon, Embellish Salon, Legacy Ball, C Spot Daiquiri, and Smokehouse Cigars just to name a few.

At the end of the day, I really have to thank God for the blessings for being a Graphic Designer.

Has it been a smooth road?
No matter what you do in life, there will always be failures and with those failures come success. I’ve sacrificed a lot of sleep and time with my family just to build a reputable brand. With that being said, part of my struggle is balancing being a husband and father while running a successful business by myself. When it comes to my brand Fly Image, it is truly a one-man show.

Another struggle I faced along the way was having the support of others. No one believed in my movement and that I would actually make it to this point and that’s okay. I learned along the way that as long as you believe in yourself and have faith, dedication, and patience you will prevail. Once you get going and just do you, the support will come.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Fly Hippie – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Fly Image is a one-stop shop Graphic Design and Printing company. My company is about making my client’s imaginations come to life. I love the look on my client’s faces when I’m able to do the unthinkable for them. It’s even more satisfying when it’s another company using my services to market their brand. I get excited for them and I am always so grateful to have played a part in their success.

I am most known for being a perfectionist; it’s what sets me apart from others in my industry. I hate sloppy work and whatever work I produce represents me and my company, so it’s very important to me that I take my time and have pride in my work.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the opportunity that the Atlanta has to offer, I mean you really can’t lose if you’re good at what you do. All it takes is faith and motivation and with those two things, you can be on top in Atlanta.

What do I dislike? Come on everyone in Atlanta will say their team. Lol, but no the only thing I will say that I dislike is how we as a whole aren’t helping to keep violence out the streets, how bullying is now at it’s all-time high to where now you have kids as young as eight taking guns to schools just to stand their ground.

I can go on and on about the things that I dislike, but I like to stay focused on ways to make my company a legacy for my daughter and a source to make changes in my community.
