Meet David Hoang

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Hoang.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
With parental pressure mounting early in life to aspire to become a doctor, I did the next best thing and became a professional nerd. Though math was an Achilles’ heel, this genetic flaw did not prevent me from practicing the sacred art of Creative – Ninjitsu.

Early years can be summed up by the nickname “Short Round.” Unfortunately, my social life was just as perilous as the nicknamed character’s film exploits. I was made fun of, bullied in general and suffered in truth: Many a swirly. To escape this brutal reality, I retreated into the worlds of the local digital dungeons and became a coin-op legacy. I soon dominated my much older peers for years to come, leading to an eventual full-blown love affair with video game competition. When I wasn’t slaying foes in Mortal Kombat I would exercise a creative vision that could only be conveyed through Cinematography.

Gangs and violence-plagued my early places of learning, so I would instead stay off the streets to perfect my craft with my friends after school spending countless hours making short films.

Due to the increasing pressure of schoolwork in college, pleasing my parents soon replaced the outlets I had once found solace in. Despite my best efforts to continue to impress them, I again denied their desires by pursuing the prerequisites needed on the path to becoming a school teacher instead.

While I was pursuing my education degree, the opportunity to participate in a national film competition presented itself. The Campus Movie Film Festival re-ignited a sleeping desire to create which led to me entering multiple film competitions. On my third attempt, I won “Best Picture” for my short film “Just Another Pho King Day” at Georgia State University in 2010. I had a friend take notice in my ability to wield a camera like a katana and she asks if I could capture her wedding day for her. This paved the way to my eventual profession.

Today, I am the founder and co-owner of Angle 3 Films. A film production company based in Atlanta, Georgia. Our mission: To create cinematic sentimental you can enjoy until the end of time!

Please tell us about what you do.
I am a Digital Storyteller and Keeper of Time!

With Angle 3 Films, I am able to capture the fairy tale love story of a couple from the moment of the first look to the last dance. We get to participate in documenting one of the most memorable days in someone’s life and allow them to share it with their friends and family for decades to come.

In my other outlets, I wear multiple hats including and not limited to being a producer, director, editor, creative talent, and writer. A lot of my editing and visual techniques are inspired by video games, movies, and anime that I enjoyed so much in my youth. I have done commercial music videos featuring international artists that expands across multiple borders for entertainment. Music is one of my interest and it has been a pleasure to be able to put it on camera.

I also enjoy making films with my friends, showcasing awkward, funny moments in our lives that I feel most people can relate to.

Ultimately, I take what I love and create content so that people who enjoy what I enjoy can appreciate it and hope it inspires them to create as well.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I do not think the role of the artist has changed. I believe the role has always been to create and inspire. The change I do see is having easier access to get your work out there. We live in an age where social media provides the opportunity to deliver your message to the masses with just the click of a button.

As an artist, I use events and current issues to fuel my creative process. With this, I am able to draw attention to issues I am passionate about.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work can be seen across multiple social media accounts and websites. Simply liking, following, and subscribing to any of them would be helpful in showing support! And if anyone needs any video content to be created feel free to contact me directly!
