Today we’d like to introduce you to Deloria Gilchrist.
Deloria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I knew in Middle School, I wanted to be in Communications, but wasn’t sure at the time, where I wanted my focus to be. I joined the Newspaper Staff, to see if I truly wanted to be a Journalist, so that was the first step. Once I entered High School, I did not join the Newspaper staff, I had more interest at that time in the Fashion and Modeling Industry. Although still interested in Communications, I started to do research about jobs in Communications and decided that PR would be the perfect fit for me and my mind never changed. After high school, I attended Clark Atlanta University where I majored in Mass Media Arts with a concentration in Public Relations. I was super excited about what the field of PR had to offer. My dream was to land a job in PR in the Fashion Industry. I wanted to work and travel with some of the top designer’s in the world. We all can dream, right? Life happens and there were other plans for me. Although I had great jobs they were never my dream job.
Years passed, I became a mother and a wife and my dreams were put on hold. After some years passed, I decided it’s my time to pursue my dreams. I decided at that moment its time, but like anyone else, I was nervous, because so many things had changed about the industry. It was at that moment, I decided to pursue my Masters in Public Relations, as this would get me back on track and I can be on top of all the new trends and technology. I received my Masters and slowly started slowly working on a strategy to start my own PR company.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I can honestly say, it has been smooth so far. I say this because I used the strategy I put in place. I started out by reaching out to people I knew who may have been working on a project or an event and volunteered to help. This way, I am getting experience, showcasing my expertise and meeting potential clients along the way. This may not work for everyone, but it has worked for me. I am all about collaboration. Great opportunities have come out of collaborating for me.
The struggle I see is people want a Publicist but truly do not understand our roles. The job of a Publicist is to increase exposure and managing a clients reputation. We are also responsible for managing your interviews, press conferences, and managing crisis. We are not personal assistants or booking agents.
