Meet DeOnte Newsom

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeOnte Newsom.

Hi DeOnte, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2018, I was led to do a photoshoot with one of my good friends. I received a lot of good feedback from the photoshoot. Shortly thereafter, It was brought to my attention that men my size actually model. Big and Tall modeling was actually a thing! A thing that I was completely unaware of but intrigued by.

So, I reached out to a few models and photographers that were already established in the industry to get advice on how to get started as a model. After extensive conversations, I had all the information I needed to become a model. Now, it’s time to put the work in.

I went through a great deal of trial and error. It was a new world for me getting comfortable in front of the camera and learning about different facets of modeling like angles, poses, and lighting. But I knew that I could do it. After many test shoots and much practice, I started to get better. By 2020, just before Covid struck, I signed my first contract and in 2021, I signed my second contract with my current agency; Bridge Agency.

Now, I continue to work and advocate for body positivity and push the envelope for Big and Tall men everywhere.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been smooth by any means. However, I can admit that many of the struggles were internal; The overthinking, the impatience, the doubt and all of the other mental conflicts we deal with as we pursue our dreams. Remember that life is less about what we do and more about who we become. Obstacles, both tangible and intangible, are only stepping stones to helping you become a better version of yourself.

Never forget that God is in control and God cares for you. God will provide you with every resource, every idea, and every solution. Continue to work and excel.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Big and Tall model. I am represented by The Bridge Agency. I am most proud about being a part of the body positivity movement for brawn men. This past September, during NYFW, I was a part of a flash mob called The Bigger Picture: A Plus Size Male Campaign. The campaign was curated to bring awareness to the lack of diversity, inclusion, and opportunities for plus-size male models in the fashion industry.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
There have been a multitude of people who have contributed to my success. In all honestly, it’s too many people to list. My friends and family have given me a great deal of love and support. Words can’t express how deeply they continue to inspire me. They are truly my most prized possession.

My agency. It’s been an incredible experience working with such kind and dedicated people. I am beyond grateful and I can’t thank you enough for all the help that you’ve bestowed upon me.

Last and certainly not least, God. God is the greatest and will forever get the credit for my success.
