Today we’d like to introduce you to Destinee Burton.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Photography started as a hobby. I would go to festivals and events. Take pictures of anything I viewed as art or interesting. I would then notice families and friends taking selfies or group pictures and usually one person out the group would be awkwardly positioned in the photo or missing fully (because they’d be the ones taking the photo) So I decided to offer to take the picture of them using my camera, then give them my Instagram to follow for when I post their photo. From there a few people who accepted actually reached out to me to do a one on one shoot with them.
Then my mother was diagnosed with cancer and that year, she ended up undergoing six surgeries and lost over 90 lbs that year. To help with her medical bills, I decided to offer photoshoots to those whoever donated. I received a lot of positive feedback in result had a lot of photoshoots. In addition the cancer was removed from her body!
The combo of the above built a decent portfolio, and the more I post my work the more attention and clients I received. Now I run it as a business
Has it been a smooth road?
Wasn’t smooth at all, trying to learn the art of photography and different styles, the technique of editing, the structure of business and the skill of marketing was all a task. Even more so that the demands from this profession changes and feeds off society and social media.
Doing this all while still working an 8-5 and being a mother of two very young children would become overwhelming. Even the investment of new cameras, computers, lens and lighting equipment would eat at my pockets where it would be discouraging to say the least, but the reactions from the clients once they received finished photos is always rewarding.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Nala Optics Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
