Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Adams.
Destiny, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am Destiny Adams and I am passionate about coding. This passion came along in middle school, after completing a Business and Computer Science Course. During this semester-long course, I learned new information from keyboard skills to introductions to coding and programming. Once this class came to an end, I noticed I was yearning to learn more about this new skill of coding and programming. I shared with my parents how much I enjoyed this class.
In less than one month, my mom decided to coach a robotics team for me. At this time, I learned the ins and outs of being a programmer and absolutely loved it! One day, I found myself stumbling upon the term “coding” again at one of my robotics competitions. At this point, I decided it was time for me to do a little more research on what this actually was. I learned that coding was incorporated in almost EVERYTHING, from the games I played on my tablet to the social media apps that my family members used.
By high school, I had my own notebook dedicated specifically to one programming language. I would spend at least 30 minutes a day writing and studying these lines of codes. Over the years my family and I have made many sacrifices to further my knowledge in Computer programming. I enrolled in professional courses, studied abroad and secured professional industry expert mentors. Every since then, coding has just become a part of my everyday life.
In addition to learning code, I also enjoy teaching others to code because it will be an important skill everyone will need to understand. So, why not join in now to explore the wonderful world of coding? Our goal for 2018 is to expose at least 1,000 girls to coding. Our campaign launch was held in December and it was a huge success.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth ride however it has been worth every challenge. The biggest challenge has been getting the word out regarding the benefits of learning how to code especially for girls. Another challenge has been getting affordable spaces to host the events and sponsorship for students that have interest but do not have the finances to participate.
Destiny Adams International – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our mission is to raise awareness to the opportunities in Computer Science and computer programming. We desire to equip youth with coding skills as a platform to their trajectory as future Leaders in Technology. One unique characteristic about our organization is our training programs are taught in a peer to peer setting.
The company’s Founder is 16 years of age and started this business when she was 15 years old. The Founder has traveled all over the world, studying and teaching coding. She has been trained professionally and partners with large corporate technology organizations.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success can be different for everyone. I measure success by goal setting, learning experiences and results/ outcomes. If I am able to grow from an experience or situation, ultimately I have succeeded.
