Today we’d like to introduce you to Dion Reid.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dion. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, my interest in photography started back in 2005 in high school when I was on the yearbook staff. I went off to college at Tuskegee University and my passion for photography became more serious then. I left Tuskegee and enrolled in art school as well as getting an associate in business management. My photography business back then was called “DKX Photography” and I was still new to the business world. At the time, I was still trying to find my style and my aesthetic, especially in the area that I was in.
In 2010, I changed my business name to my screen name which is “DionKx.” My focus on portrait photography was on another level. I’m able to create an image in my head while shooting. At times my goals that were set were not met, but that never stopped me. I continue to grind and am able to display my work to potential clients, even when I had doubters. Now I can say that my creative level is where I want it to be. My goal now is to continue to grow and expand my photography, not only in the south but in major cities. Photography has taught me a lot about my creativity and my ability to remain focus driven.
Has it been a smooth road?
To start, back when I made the decision to become a photographer, some of my family members told me that I would never make money taking pictures. Also back then I didn’t have the right equipment. A lot of my equipment back then were hand me downs. I had to borrow people’s computer to edit photos while I was saving money for my own. At one point in my life, I was like, “Is it going to be worth it in the end?”My mom always told me, “Work with what you got” and I took that to heart. There were good times when I was “booked and busy” and there were months where I didn’t get a single gig. I felt stuck, but talking to other photographers and getting guidance made me more confident to keep my head up.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
DionKx is not only just a screen name, it’s my brand. I specialize in portrait photography. I think what sets me apart is my editing. I’ve worked hard on creating a style to where if my photo is shared on social media, people can instantly say “Dion took that!” I’m proud that my work and my brand has expanded. My proudest moment was publishing not one, but two coffee table books.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
One of the main goals I have on my list is to have an art gallery displaying not only my work but other local photographers as well. I see myself traveling more and networking with other well-known photographers. Also, I want to focus more on a new style of photography and mentoring future artists. I’m excited to see what the future holds.
