Meet Dr. Porcia Love of River Region Dermatology and Laser

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Porcia Love.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a Board Certified Dermatologist and the founder of River Region Dermatology and Laser in Montgomery, AL. I am also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, where I enjoy precepting and mentoring resident physicians and medical students. I am married to Montgomery County Probate Judge J C Love, III. We have three children — Caroline (age 5), Catherine (age 3), and James (age 2).

I am a native of Montgomery and graduated from the LAMP Program at Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery. I received my Biology degree at the University of Alabama and my medical degree from Duke University. I completed my Dermatology residency training at Duke University Hospital, where I held the honor of serving as Chief Resident. I also completed a clinical research fellowship at the National Cancer Institute, where my research focused on skin cancer in young women and minority populations. After my Dermatology training, I returned to Montgomery to begin practicing Dermatology in 2013. I founded River Region Dermatology and Laser in 2016.

My special interests include acne, hair loss, pigmentation disorders, cosmetic dermatology, laser surgery, skin cancer prevention and treatment, and skin of color. I am also the coeditor of the textbook, Clinical Cases in Skin of Color. I was recently named a 2018 “Woman Who Shapes the State” by AL.com and the Birmingham Media Group and a 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr Community Honoree by Alabama State University and Troy University Performing Arts Schools.

I am a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, the Skin of Color Society, and the Women’s Dermatologic Society. I am the current President of the Capital City Medical Society. I also serve on the University of Alabama’s Community Affairs Board of Advisors, the Leadership Advisory Board of the American Cancer Society, Leadership Montgomery, Medical Outreach Ministries, and Junior League. I am a proud member of Jack and Jill of America, The Links, Incorporated, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Three weeks after I opened my practice, I was placed on hospital bed rest for six weeks prior to the birth of my 2nd child, Catherine Grace. I had to hire a part-time Dermatologist to see my patients while I was hospitalized. This was extremely stressful given the fact that we had just opened our doors. Thankfully, the community rallied behind us and we have been busy ever since.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Founded in 2016, River Region Dermatology and Laser is a comprehensive skincare center providing medical Dermatology, cosmetic and spa procedures, and laser surgery in all skin types. The center is led by Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Porcia Love, with two advanced care nurse practitioners. We diagnose and treat conditions such as acne, discoloration, hair loss, moles, and skin cancer, particularly in patients with skin of color. Dermatologists with expertise in treating patients with skin of color are a rare find, and I am the only African American Dermatologist outside the city of Birmingham, servicing the central and southern portion of Alabama; therefore, I have numerous patients seeking my expertise. We also have two medical aestheticians that perform spa procedures. Cosmetic services include Botox, chemical peels, facial rejuvenation, microneedling, laser surgery, and Coolsculpting.

River Region Dermatology and Laser is one of three Flagship Skinceuticals Advanced Clinical Spas in the state of Alabama, exclusively providing the #1 professional skincare line in the world. I am also one of the only Dermatologists in the state that performs platelet rich plasma therapy for hair loss, particularly in African American women. River Region Dermatology and Laser is dedicated to consistently providing patients with excellent service, the most advanced skincare, and cutting-edge laser technology in a comfortable environment. We aim to provide each patient with a personalized skincare or hair regimen combined with minimally invasive cosmetic procedures to achieve beautiful, healthy skin and hair. ‘

Characteristics that set our Dermatology practice apart from others are our comprehensive cosmetic services and our expertise in hair loss and patients with skin of color. As such, since opening in November 2016, we have treated over 20000 patients in central and southern Alabama, western Georgia, eastern Mississippi, and the panhandle of the Florida — all seeking out the expertise of Dr. Love. Since its inception, River Region Dermatology and Laser has partnered with several community organizations, and we were honored to be named a 2019 “Leading Workplace for Women” by the Girls Scouts of Southern Alabama. In 2018, the Alabama Media Group also named Dr. Love 1 of 30 “Women Who Shape the State.”

What were you like growing up?
I was pretty studious growing up but well rounded. In high school, I was Class Salutatorian, a Majorette and voted most likely to succeed. In college, I was President of my Sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, and Director of the University of Alabama’s Community Service Center.
