Today we’d like to introduce you to Dubelyoo.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m a visual artist /curator that lives and works in Atlanta. My career started off illustrating for hip-hop magazines and brands. For the last 13 years, I have been the curator of Art, Beats + Lyrics. Our art exhibition hits about 10 stadiums, arenas, and museums around the country.
Please tell us about your art.
I create art that reflects hip-hop and urban life. I like to use contrasting motifs like man-made vs nature and the past vs the present. I strive to create images that have a familiar looking face involved with a background that feels authentic and gives subtle nods to those that recognized the cultural references. My approach to creating is aligned with the culture that it is inspired by. I’m no purist when it comes to media, I have a do whatever it takes to make it funky attitude when in the studio.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
The role of the artist to create and to connect with people.
The role has not changed much but how the artist connects with people has. We have more outlets for expression than ever before. The challenge used to be being heard, now the challenge is saying something worth hearing.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have a few murals throughout the city. I also participate in various shows and charity event but primarily you can catch my work at one of our tour stops throughout the year.
