Meet Elizabeth Mosley of Muse.Works in Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Mosley.

Elizabeth, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m an NCIDQ certified, award winning Interior Designer and I do this work because I care about the way we experience space! Our spaces hold a profound psychological effect over the way we live, work and play, and I’m here to optimize that relationship for you.

I combine my diverse background of experiences and techniques into a comprehensive plan for the interior; I’ll find a solution using my study of Interior Architecture, rigorous Professional Organization (decluttering!) and metaphysical elements such as the historical tradition of Feng Shui, just to name a few.

Problem solving requires all of these considerations for a well-considered, successful answer… this process is alchemy-like and the results are just as magical; A harmonious, optimized space. The method works for spaces of all types; residential and commercial, old and new, small and large. The only thing I need to start is your vision!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The ongoing challenge has been finding and creating this path, this niche, that skillfully combines all that I have to offer this world. It’s the reason why I took the risk to follow this pursuit and create my own business.

Here I am, today and for the past decade, obsessed with space, architecture, and design. But that isn’t all that my mind is on; I am a visual artist. I have a degree in Historic Preservation. I have an advanced understanding of psychology. I have a lifelong fascination with the metaphysical. I have a personal stake in health and fitness. And then, I have this genuine heart and its sincere yearning to share all of these traits and passions in an authentic, positive way.

Find a firm that has the bandwidth to give me creative freedom to express all of this through the work, to pursue all of these considerations for and with a client. You can’t. Or at least, I couldn’t. So I had to create it.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Aside from what I’ve already shared, another thing that sets Muse.Works apart are the tools that I use in the studio. Many creative breakthroughs are achieved by traditional means, with pen on a humble cocktail napkin, for example. However, I also use 3D and 4D modeling software that helps us visualize the space in new ways.

The client and I can spin the space around like a dollhouse. I can even place ourselves inside the space as it will look, while you’re standing right there, in Virtual Reality or on a mobile device. This is not only fun and inspiring… it also bridges the gap for the client, bringing them closer to their vision.

The model I create is “smart,” so, elements such as walls and doors have properties like dimension, quantity, and finish material. This expedites construction and coordination, making it an excellent tool for Design-Build projects. The software is called Revit by AutoDesk. Check out some of the things we’ve done with it on our website, www.muse.works.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was and still am, very curious, creative, sensitive and full of fantasy. It can be a troublesome mix as a child! I’m thankful, though, because as an adult these traits have served me SO well.

As a child, growing up in my parents’ manse of a house (all the more large when you’re only 3 feet tall!) I would find and create “moments.” A secluded nook where I could take a book… a place where, at a specific time every day, I would watch a warm pool of sunlight cast prismatic rainbows on the wall… a next-level pillow fort that housed summertime pursuits… I would relish these moments without inhibition in that childlike way.

Looking back, I was threading together an “experience” with a “place” to create a “feeling”. It’s something very intuitive that I’ve always carried within me.

As a teen, I would organize my closet by type and then by color. I wanted to feel like I was shopping out of my own closet as I got dressed in the morning. This is still how I do it and how I encourage my residential clients to do it – it’s about drawing joy out of the mundane. Opportunities like these are all around us and as you can tell, I’ve been discovering and drawing from their power for a long time.
