Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Levin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Photography has always been a dream of mine ever since I was a kid. I remember being the one with a camera in my hands constantly taking pictures in the hallways at school, in the dugout playing softball, hanging out with friends growing up. When I started getting older, I was constantly going to local shows seeing bands all over Houston and that’s where it really hit me that this is something I need to pursue. I spent some time moving all over the country and still took photos but it kind of got put in the back burner for a bit while life was happening. It wasn’t until recently that I started to chase the dream again. While I was moving around, I really got into bartending and loved what I did, but it still just wasn’t enough and didn’t light that fire in me. So, I upgraded all my equipment and went back out there to chase my passion again. The rest has been history, I still work at a bar part-time while I pursue what I truly want to do. I started to really put myself out there, joined some networking groups, have been attending and photographing a lot of local Atlanta bands, started out shooting some friends and people I knew while I created and grew my business into what it’s become today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been mostly a pretty smooth road along the way. I mean, plain and simple, life and things happens but I think alot of it is how you choose to perceive these kinds of situations. There was this one time where I was out doing a shoot (I was shooting with a Canon 5D Mark ii at the time), everything was great in the beginning and the pictures were coming out fantastic. Towards the end of the shoot, I started to notice the pictures were just slightly out of focus. Long story short, I took the camera in to get it looked at and it ended up being completely unfixable. The positive out of the situation, I still got great photos before my camera broke and now, I got to upgrade to the Canon 5D Mark IV. So yes, there has been some struggles at times, but overall, I’ve been fortunate to have mainly nothing but smooth sailing.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Elevin Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I recently branched out on my own and founded Elevin Photography in early 2019. Photography has always been a passion of mine and I love being able to capture meaningful moments in people’s lives. Whether it’s a portrait session, a corporate event, wedding, or live band show I just want to be able to create memories that will last a lifetime for people to enjoy. Live band photography has always been the dream and the direction I want to go but I’m finding out while doing that, how much I love being able to make people comfortable shooting with me and enjoy the process of having me help them create pictures for them to cherish forever. I’m most proud of just getting out there and giving it all I got. I feel like so many people give excuses as to why they aren’t chasing their dream. It’s hard to sometimes make yourself vulnerable when people are quick to judge and criticize but ultimately, you need to take a chance to be proud of what you’re putting out there no matter what some people may think. And that’s not always an easy thing to do.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is a hard one, but I typically feel like it’s on my side. I strongly believe if you do good things in this world, good things tend to come back your way. A lot of my luck has been the right time, right place kind of situations. I’ve been very fortunate with meeting some great connections that have led me to others and so on. Even when minor strings of bad luck have happened, it usually leads to better situations pulling through in the end. I truly believe with hard work and a little good luck the possibilities of doing anything you want are endless.
