Meet Breya Rodgers of equilibreyaum in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Breya Rodgers.

Breya, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up as a military brat, I was fortunate to meet some extraordinary people and experience different cultures and I’m so grateful for that. I’ve lived in Germany and Hawai’i but primarily grew up in the metro DC area. I moved to Atlanta in 2017. I graduated early from Auburn University with a degree in broadcast journalism because I’ve always loved a good story. I had dreams of becoming a news anchor but quickly switched things up after my first job in the newsroom. My marketing job at a non-profit theatre sparked my interest and I never looked at another teleprompter again. I held several other jobs in marketing and advertising but realized that I needed a creative outlet because I wasn’t exactly happy being a disposable office robot.

In college, I was the host of a local web series where I interviewed local artists and shared my thoughts on the latest gossip in Hollywood. I missed this freedom of expression and launched my YouTube channel, equilibreyaum, in 2018. equilibreyaum quickly blossomed into a full-fledged company as I was happier than ever being creative again. My brand is now dedicated to creative storytelling through content marketing, photography, video and handmade gifts. I’ve found a way to incorporate all of my passions and I’m finally at peace.

Storytelling is so important and we need more people working in the space because there are so many stories to tell.  So, let’s dig a little deeper into your story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The way my life is set up, a smooth road was never an option! equilibreyaum started as a hobby – I was just making a little talk show with my husband in our living room, making little crafts for my family and friends, then everything got real at the end of 2018. Suddenly, this disposable office robot was dumped like it was nothing and without a viable reason. I had placed so much of my self-worth and measured my success by my jobs that it completely shattered me to my core.

After my bosses had repeatedly told me I wasn’t good enough, didn’t deserve to attend company conferences or that I seemed apathetic because I wasn’t the angry black woman trope, I was determined to make my last job work to prove them all wrong. However, when it didn’t work, I realized this was all divine intervention. Regardless of what I did or how I acted, they would never value me and I can’t control that, but what I can control is how I feel about myself.

With the incredible support from my family and friends, I picked myself up and remembered that I’m the only one responsible for my happiness. No one will ever be able to tell me what I’m worth or how I should be acting because I know now to always trust myself. I added digital marketing services to equilibreyaum and officially created my business in the new year. Now, I’m so thankful to have clients that appreciate my work and treat me with the respect I deserve. My journey has been challenging but I’m grateful to have met people who tore me down so I could evolve into the woman I could have only imagined.

What else should we know?
Storytelling is at the basis of everything I do. equilibreyaum is dedicated to creative storytelling through content marketing, photography, video and handmade gifts.

I have an authentic approach where I’m genuinely interested in sharing stories that all women can connect with. I’ve worked in a variety of industries so I know what it takes to provide value and make content resonate.

My agency clients include women in the real estate industry – realtors, builders and designers and more. I handle everything digital – social media management, email marketing, content creation and website maintenance. I provide strategic marketing and advertising advice while managing their online accounts so they don’t have to do anything but run their empires. In addition to marketing services, my husband and I also provide photography for brands, lifestyle and events.

I’m proud of all that equilibreyaum has become but if I had to pick one thing, it would be my YouTube show. It’s how everything started and it means so much to me even if no one were to ever watch it! I’m in my second season, where I’m interviewing successful businesswomen and talking with them about their journey to success. They are transparent episodes that talk about what it takes to run a business and it’s been so fun meeting everyone!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is bike riding with my brother. We lived on an Air Force base in Hawai’i and we had so much freedom to ride up to the BX or up to the teen center. Our adventures were so fun because we would go as fast as possible and try to leave the other one behind. We had awful control and it was so hilarious when we would run into people or trees on our bikes. Good times.
