Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Jay.
Evan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I got started with photography when I was in college. I picked up a camera because the job I had at the time required me to travel to other countries. When I was traveling, it was most often by myself, so I decided to bring a camera with me to pass the time. This soon turned into me taking classes and going on photography excursions when I was back home in Atlanta. Soon, I was taking photos of models, and that quickly translated into me creating images for commercial and marketing use for companies. The next step is to get one of those commercial campaigns to show up in Times Square.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think that any road worth traveling is going to come with its own set of bumps. My journey has been filled with them, that I can assure you. I think a lot of artists in my position would list money as a key obstacle to overcome. Not only in the sense that it takes a lot of money to get these beautiful images produced, but also because every project you work on is not paid. And the jobs that are paid, generally do not pay that much in the beginning (or even the middle for that matter). I would say one of the biggest struggles for me now is time. There never seems to be enough of it to go around. And there always seems to be a decision between equally important job choices. Which one will lead you further down your career path tends to be something that you can only see in hindsight.
Evan Jay Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a fashion and editorial photography. I don’t like to limit myself to any one thing, but I would say that my specializations tend to be more beauty and portrait. My work is best known for the use of color and the creative use of the various colors’ saturation. Being able to work with such amazing, and creative, people to produce some truly inspiring work is the most rewarding part of running this company. I get to see the final products enjoyed and appreciated by people all over the world.
I am also starting to do some exhibitions that highlight different skin tones as it relates to beauty and how we perceive beauty. I will be wrapping up a showcase in London pretty soon actually, and hopefully I will be able to bring the next version of it right here to Atlanta.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I am certain that I define success differently than most. The measure of success is internal for me. Although I appreciate an audience that likes my work, the most important measure is always going to be me. I am successful every time that I see a final image and have a brief moment where I am proud of what has been created. As long as those moments continue, I will always be successful.
