Today we’d like to introduce you to Felicia Lanier and Taundra Dunbar.
Felicia and Taundra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2018, two nurses/moms, came together and created Kids Coloring Co. It started out as a conversation about creating an interactive book that would give kids the opportunity to read and cook with family. After further discussion and inspiration from our children, we came up with the concept of a recipe coloring book. The premise behind our products is to encourage families to spend quality time with each other and make memories. Our motto is “Making Memories One Coloring Book At A Time”. Our recipe coloring book is a 3-in-1, read, color and cook activity. It is a fun, interactive way for kids to engage in building literacy, creativity and confidence all while spending time with loved ones. Since the start of our company, we have expanded our products to include additional children’s activities such as garden kits and travel kits.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our road has had its share of bumps and we continue to have struggles. At the start of our business, since we were new entrepreneurs there was a lot for us to learn and much of what we learned was self-taught. One of the biggest struggles we had early on was finding an illustrator. We had hired individuals and then couldn’t get the illustrations to look like we envisioned. Through the trials we were able to gain much knowledge about hiring an illustrator and setting expectations. Much of our work has been trial and error and we continue to learn along the way.
Another one of our struggles is developing daily social media content. Being that we are working mothers, posting on social media is sometimes left on the bottom of our daily to do list. If you have a small business it is imperative to have social media. Social media introduces your products to a wide range audience. Although creating content is fun, it is a discipline that you must keep up with to keep your audience engaged.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kids Coloring Co – what should we know?
Kids Coloring Co creates children’s activities that encourage families to spend quality time. We currently have five recipe coloring books available for sale. Each recipe coloring book includes a full story about a character that is making a particular recipe, multiple pages for coloring and a full recipe to make with loved ones. We take pride in offering recipe coloring books that have characters of color that add to the diversity of options that children have to select from. We also offer garden kits that include all the supplies needed to make a small garden at home. The garden kit is a fun STEM activity that promotes healthy eating, enhances fine motor development, and teaches responsibility. Our travel kits offer fun-filled activities to keep children occupied while traveling.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We believe that perseverance is most important to our success. We have a great product that has connected with many consumers thus far. We know that if we continue to be diligent and persistent on our journey, then we will be successful.
