Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Brown.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Garrett. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My name is Garrett Brown, a.k.a GB3. I was born in Marietta, raised in McDonough. I’m a Georgia State Alumni; I received my Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. After graduating from high school back in 2015, I had narrowed down to either attending to Georgia Southern or Georgia State University. I chose Georgia State because I felt that if I was going to pursue a career in the media/entertainment industry and networking with other professionals was going to be important for me. Therefore, being in the heart of Atlanta would give me the opportunity to do so. When I officially became a student, I first participated in their student-broadcast network PrimeTimeSportz as a sports reporter. I was with the organization for a year and decided to explore other options because I didn’t think being a reporter was something I could envision myself doing.
However, I discovered that the school had a radio station, “Album 88.” I always had an interest in radio, so I took the chance to see what they were about. It turned out that I was beginning to enjoy radio a lot. I enjoyed it so much that every Saturday, I was looking forward to the graveyard shift I had took, which was from 5-8 AM. Throughout my tenure there, the biggest moment I had was having the opportunity to interview former Disney-star Roshon Fegan and platinum singing artist Adrian Marcel together about their film “The Bobby DeBarge Story” last summer. Also, around that time, I landed an internship with Kluster Radio Media, located in Ellenwood, Georgia. Once I finished my internship, I was offered to have my own radio show, “The GB3 Show.”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road for me. I can take all the way back to middle school up until high school. I had issues maintaining my grades. Not to say I was a bad student but just keeping my grades up was hard. I even remembered a time during high school, as I was preparing for my SAT’s and ACT’s, an instructor told me and my parents that I was only qualified to get an Associates Degree, nothing more. I had to start off at a different institution (Gordon State College) before transferring to Georgia State. On the more personal side, trying to find myself and purpose in this world has been a challenge and to this day, it still is. People have treated me unfairly despite me being good and doing right by them. I had to learn a harsh lesson that everyone isn’t your friend and one thing that my mother has told me is, “Some people are only meant to be in your life just for a season and move on.” As I’ve gotten older, I have now realized people who I view as a real friend and who I can count on and I’m highly grateful for that.
We’d love to hear more about The GB3 Show.
The name of my business is ‘The GB3 Show.’ We’re live on WTTRadio, Sundays from 9-11 AM. I have three talented co-hosts: Chauncey Carter, Mira Sawyer and Daesia Joiner. I’m the lead host, social media handler, board operator and audio editor of the show. What I’m most proud of about this is that I believe that it’ll help me reach toward my dream job, which is to be a radio personality for iHeartRadio. Also, knowing that my show is worth something for my co-hosts or anyone I decide to hire, of adding to their resume and hope that it’ll assist in reaching their goals and dreams as well.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future is to seek other strategies to make my show better and more fun to listen to, keep working my dream job, continue networking with other professionals and reach higher ground as an individual.
