Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Burnham.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m a military kid. Was able to travel a lot early in life. I fell in love with writing in the 4th grade. That’s when I wrote my first story: a total rip off of Star Wars. I also had a love for sports, and that’s where I spent most of my time. Many years later, in college, I had a professor that really enjoyed my writing, she encouraged me like no one else had. A few years later, I moved to Atlanta, met Marcus Williams (Illustrator extraordinaire) and we created our first comic called “Starvin’ Artist” We created the comic and printed it ourselves. It was a hit, it sold well. The problem was that we were losing money with every comic sold. We realized that we needed to learn the business side of things. So a little down the road, I wrote a couple of children’s books “Broken Glass” and “Grandpa’s Shoes” and Marcus worked on the “Hero Cats” comics. This helped us learn the publishing side and allowed us to self publish “Tuskegee Heirs”.
Please tell us about your art.
I create children’s books — Broken Glass and Grandpa’s Shoes. And comic books — Tuskegee Heirs and the soon to be released The Search For Sadiqah.
Inspiration–I simply want to create the things I wish I could have seen when I was young. Things that aren’t stereotypical, that show nuance amongst under-represented people…
As for Art, Marcus Williams is my primary artist and business partner of 18 years. He’s amazing!!
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think things are becoming easier. There’s so much affordable technology. Combined with the internet, it seems that the only limitations are the ones we put on ourselves.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
