Meet Griffith and Cheryl Day of Back in the Day Bakery in Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Griffith and Cheryl Day.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Griffith and Cheryl. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Established in 2002, Back in the Day Bakery is an independent business creating handcrafted Southern biscuits, lunch and desserts. Cheryl and Griffith are dedicated to filling the void of comfort food for those in search of good ol’fashioned goodness like our grandparents lived “back in the day”.

Nationally recognized and locally adored for its decadent homespun desserts and delicious rustic breads, Back in the Day Bakery is a Savannah landmark. Biscuits, pies and cookies along with a lunch menu and great coffee all fall under one roof with a slowdown and taste the sweet life mentality.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being open for almost 16 years there have always been struggles and there will be more in the future.

Getting your footing in the early years and working to get your vision of your business off the ground was hard.

But years of hard work, long hours and a laser focus on our goals was always in place. The hardest part of running our business is finding the people who have a passion for what we do. Talent and dedication rarely go hand in hand, but we’ve had a lot of great employees who have helped us grow and meet new goals.

Please tell us about Back in the Day Bakery.
Back in the Day Bakery first and foremost is an artisan bakery featuring Southern recipes from family recipes and traditional recipes with high-quality ingredients. The tradition of baking is deep with history and we respect and enhance the what we make with passion and the love of baking.

Currently, we are making Southern biscuits sandwiches, breakfast, lunch and pies/desserts.

We are proud to be pioneers in a neighborhood in Savannah that was forgotten and run down; The Starland Neighborhood has been developing since we’ve opened in 2002 and is now recognized as a burgeoning/artistic area within Savannah.

We are groundbreaking food pioneers and a favorite with our customers and fans who travel to Savannah

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Cheryl and I both cherish the memories of baking with our mothers and grandparents. The tradition of family, food and celebration.
