Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwali Guys.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the music, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For those who are not familiar with these faces, it’s time you get to know who we are. We are the Gwali Guys. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Although we don’t have a famous relative who did music like other artists, we’ve been around and involved in music since the womb. Growing up around the house, our parents would always play artists like Michael Jackson, Awilo Longomba, Chris Brown and wake us up to MTV’s countdown playlist to get ready for school. At the age of five, Kenny would study the moves of the late Michael Jackson and perform his songs at school talent shows and party events. He gained so much interest in his music that he started writing his own music by the age of eight. GG started writing music at the age of seven and recorded his first verse at the age of 11. By that time, he was welcomed on stage to perform with his sister in big events planned by family. GG fell in love with what he was doing and then made it a hobby. He wrote up to 50 raps by himself and decided that this is where he wanted his future to be.
Throughout the years, our passion for music made us realize that we should form our dedication together by creating this rap duo. We take every piece of knowledge gained from the music we listened to growing up and make it into something WE call music.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There will never be something called “success” with a smooth road. Growing up in a city like Detroit, it was a struggle financially. Times were hard when we couldn’t get everything we needed. Moving to ATL was the best decision for us because it put us in a better position financially and musically. Atlanta had a huge impact in shaping our music because of the different sounds and the many artists that we come across who have the same ambition that we possess. We also came across many people who made this journey a little more difficult than usual. A mixture of engineers, producers and artists who continue to not take actions in their words could leave us to replanning our next move. However, none of these things will put an end to what we love doing the most.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
The Gwali Guys. We are a very unique set of artists looking to explore and expand our sound in music. Our genre can go from real rap to R&b, to afrobeat, to a mixture of all in one song! We are known for how unpredictable we can be when we step into the recording booth. You can listen to any one of our songs and find out what sets us apart from other artists. The lyrics, the beat choices, the production, it all adds up to define who we are as musicians. We are proud of the odds we beat to get this far and what we have accomplished in less than two years. We will continue to prove to the audience why we should be your favorite artists.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is an accomplishment after completing every goal you set for yourself. If you want to be successful, things such as hard work, dedication, and ambition are mandatory. You may have some trials and tribulations along the way of success, but the most important part is how you bounce back from those situations.
