Meet Jane Biven of HalfBakedArt in Roswell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Biven.

Jane, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In early 2012, at the age of 48, (and after 30 years in the restaurant business) I finally figured out “what I wanted to be when I grew up”! HalfBakedArt was born 5 years ago. It took a lot of hard work, some luck and the love and support of wonderful friends and family. I am so grateful for even the smallest of successes. Each one gives me a sense of satisfaction. I can’t believe how rewarding it is!

While renovating the interior of my home and experimenting with various materials to create faux finishes, I discovered my creative passion and I stumbled into resin art. Although, I don’t take credit for its actual discovery, I did develop the recipes and pioneer the techniques, now practiced by artists worldwide, I am a self-taught artist with no training or instruction, so I used my strengths in marketing, my computer skills and researched the internet for all the information I could find on selling art on line. All the while, learning all I could about my medium, and its chemistry, until I mastered it.

I established connections, got my work in local galleries, and was making unique artwork. I found my paintings were well suited for hotels, corporate offices and public buildings. My brand was recognized and selling worldwide.

Has it been a smooth road?
There have definitely been a few bumps in the road. My business has been completely self-funded – there’s been no investors or business loans – which is why it’s grown slowly compared to some other businesses

I’ve had a few cash flow issues. – it can be difficult when I have to fill orders coming in, but I don’t get paid for a couple of weeks or even a month. My wonderful mom has helped me out!

Organization is essential!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a resin artist. I combine acrylics and inks with epoxy resin to create contemporary abstract paintings. I am best known for my original resin paintings, large scale colorful art that makes a statement. I also offer limited edition prints on acrylic, metal and canvas. My designs are printed on throw pillows and home decor items which were recently featured in HGTV Magazine

I am a creative entrepreneur. An artist and designer, creating both art and opportunities. As the sole operator of a small business, I do it all! Everything from marketing to accounting. Managing a half dozen online shops can be a 3-ring circus. And, oh yeah, painting! —there’s just not enough time in the day, however organized you are and I have to remind myself of that sometimes.

I gained some early success by building my brand right out of the gate. And yes, it’s true…timing is everything!!

I owe a big part of my success to several designers, decorators and art consulting firms that I work with, both locally and nationally.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I am a native Atlantan, so I’m very happy here. As far as advice for an artist just starting their business…sure. Atlanta is a big city with plenty of opportunities.
