Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Guthrie.
Hannah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been drawing since I could hold a crayon and have been artistic in general all my life. My family and I would travel a lot as well, and I’d typically have a disposable camera on me. I also loved experimenting with my outfits.
One of my favorite memories was in middle school, and my friend and I decided we should make use of our field day and wear one of our costume dresses. I can’t remember what she wore, but I remember being Belle in a red Disney princess dress with a bunch of bows and lace and frill and a petticoat underneath.
I started out pursuing fashion design in college, but dropped out after a year, then worked for a year at my dad’s company, then went to community college for a year to try and get my grades up until I found out about Portfolio Center.
I dual majored in drawing and photography for about a year before changing to only photography. I graduated with my photography degree, and now I live with my boyfriend in Roswell, GA.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m my own worst enemy. I struggle with anxiety and surges of depression, and that can definitely be a struggle, but it’s not constant and has gotten much better. I think the hardest thing I deal with is picking which creative outlet to stick with.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am mainly known for my photography, but I think my illustration is a strong contender, too. I have many interests and am always trying to start some kind of new project.
I photograph women in fashion and lingerie, and nude and my illustrations are based on the same things. I think every woman should model in lingerie or nude once to boost their confidence. My goal is to make women feel beautiful.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Graduating from Portfolio Center was pretty huge for me. I also won several gold and silver medals there, and my art is still on the walls. I’m pretty happy I’ve been able to work with people to create that, and I’m happy that my work was received well.
