Today we’d like to introduce you to Harrison Nevel.
Harrison, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Ever since I was a kid, I have always been creating something using a camera, whether that be photos or videos. I started watching YouTube videos at a young age and I was always fascinated by the creators on the platform that we’re making a living off of sharing their content. At this point, I was only doing it for fun and messing around, and I wasn’t particularly serious about it, however, I knew this was something that I was capable of and something that I genuinely wanted to do. From there, I just needed to figure out how to make it happen.
I started out by posting videos on YouTube for years trying different things and different types of content from technology review videos, to video game videos. I needed to narrow my focus to one topic and find something that I could try to build a following from.
One day I was sitting with my buddy in my college dining hall trying brainstorming different topics and interests of mine and one of the things that always stood out was that my friends always asked me how to dress like me, where to find clothes for cheap, where do I find inspiration, etc. So I did some research see if other people were doing the same thing on YouTube and I only found three others. One had 8,000 subscribers, one had 22,000 subscribers and another had around 5,000 subscribers. I took this as an opportunity because it was so fresh on YouTube and I just went for it. From there, I decided I would post 1 video a week for 52 weeks, and after those 52 weeks, If I did not reach a goal of 5,000 subscribers, I would sit back and re-evaluate what I am doing.
This is what kick-started my journey of balancing being a full-time college student, part-time working to make money to pay rent, and my passion of creating videos on YouTube. After this first 52 weeks of sticking to my schedule, I amassed over 55,000 subscribers and 1 million video views.
After about a year and a half of taking it seriously, I was able to quit my job and take the remainder of my college courses online to pursue my passion as a full-time YouTuber.
Has it been a smooth road?
There has always been some struggle along the way. My YouTube career and content is solely dependent on me and whether or not people are responding to what I have created and shared. There will be months when I bring in 5,000,000 views and am growing my audience exponentially, but the next month is unpredictable and I could be getting 1,000,000 views and have slow growth. Seeing that firsthand is a little bit scary because there is always the risk that everything I’ve built up could be gone in the blink of an eye.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a content creator on the platform YouTube. I am known for creating Sneaker/Fashion content which I do around the city of Atlanta. I specialize in creating video content on YouTube to the highest production level possible to retain my audience as well as grow my audience with fresh content as much as possible. I am most proud of my ability to come up with ideas that draw people’s attention and interest them in what I’m doing. The thing that sets me apart is my ideas and production, as I am willing to take risks with my content in able to make myself stand out.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the online video industry shifting more from the creative freedom of posting anything you want online, to more formal like television. Some people find this as a problem as YouTube was created and built as a platform for people to post whatever they want and get away from the traditional TV content and build an audience.
