Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Holm.
Hi Heather, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I had no formal art training until I went to college and took a figure structure class. After that, I was hooked. I went on to receive a BFA in painting and drawing from the University of Utah. Around that same time, I married and had babies. Eight years went by before the haze of motherhood began to lift, and I was able to get back to what I loved. I began small by applying to local art competitions, which I was accepted into, and helped to build my confidence. From there was invited to exhibit in galleries, group shows, and solo exhibitions. I get rejected sometimes but have had some amazing opportunities and successes as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Dealing with the business side of things, such as marketing on Instagram, expenses, taxes, navigating new technologies such as “AI,” and “NFT’s” when all I want to do is paint can be frustrating. It takes up an enormous amount of time. All in all, it’s pretty terrific being my own boss and mostly getting to do what I love for a living!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a contemporary landscape painter and also dabble in still life and figurative painting. My work is nostalgic and usually based on favorite pastimes and sacred places where I grew up in a small town near Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. My work is not a replication but in the “Romantic Era” tradition, founded on emotions, remembrance, and transcendence.
My work is known for its expressive brush strokes, marks, textures, movement, and drama. One of my main goals is to keep the work fresh without overworking. One of the hardest things for painters is to know when to stop.
I’m proud of how my style has developed over the years, and I try not to be influenced by any artist, although I’m sure I am subconsciously. I feel this sets me apart as I do not fight what comes out of my own hand, and I find that others respond to that. I received the most satisfaction when I can connect with my audience by being authentic.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Hiking with my grandpa nearly every weekend when I was little, and working in Canyonlands National Park as a teenager.
