Today we’d like to introduce you to Jada Lewis.
Jada, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I remember the first time I sang in front of a crowd. I went to Georgetown Elementary in Columbus, GA and was in Kindergarten in the after school program at the time. I had a teacher named Mrs. Betty, who was asking some of the kids to sing. I went up there and sang “Do you love me” by the Contours. Funny? I know. After that, another teacher named Mrs. Addie had me singing “If I ain’t got you” by Alicia Keys in front of the whole breakfast crowd in the mornings. I had the main track playing in the backgrounds and she would just turn down the volume so people could hear my voice. Those teachers don’t realize that they are a HUGE reason I am singing today. They helped me to discover the talent.
When I got to 7th grade, I began to go to church a lot with my mom. The funny thing is, she didn’t have to force me to join anything I wanted to. I loved everything about church. I was in the choir, on the dance team, in the youth department, in the media ministry, etc. I loved it. I started learning more about music and the different ways to train my vocals. I started listening to different gospel artists like The Clark Sisters, Yolanda Adams, Marvin Winans, Kierra Sheard, etc. They would master and perfect different runs and I wanted to do the same exact thing. When training myself with RnB, I would listen to Whitney Houston, Kelly Price, Jazmine Sullivan, Aretha Franklin, etc. So you mix all that together, you get me. I began writing decent in 2019 with the inspiration and encouragement from of a few friends and the disappointments from a few people. I put out my first song August 9, 2019. And the rest is history.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A lot of challenges are just the doubts I have myself. I always wonder if I should just stop or if it’s worth it, but I always remember nothing worth having comes easy. It takes a lot to be any type of entrepreneur and A LOT of investing. But I’d rather invest in my dream than only invest in others.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I currently have three singles out on all platforms and have a YouTube channel (IntroducingJada). I am also working on a project and always putting out new music. I feel that my sound is just a little different from others. I’m a very soulful singer. The old folks call it “Feel good music.”
I am most proud of my growth as an artist. The way I am consistent in trying to write, being able to listen and take constructive criticism, blocking out negativity, and they want to learn more about the industry.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Singing Happy Birthday on the announcements to all of the teachers in fifth grade and always watching Tyler Perry plays and singing those songs.
