Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Miller.
Jade, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
So I grew up in a house with six girls, we had no choice but to learn how to do our own hair. Each of us took a liking to different things, but I was the one who took more of a passion to the beauty industry. I was super skinny growing up, so I used my hair to take the focus off of my size. This resulted in me constantly being in front of the mirror, trying out new styles. As time went on, I started learning other skills to improve, not only just in hair but cosmetics overall. Growing up, I knew I always wanted to be a first-generation business owner but wasn’t sure in what. So I had to put my goals to the side and get a full-time job to make sure my bills were paid, and I could survive. I was actually making some good money but I wasn’t happy. So one day on the clock, I found myself looking into cosmetology school. I enrolled in that day. Not knowing how I was going to afford it or fit it in my already busy schedule. But after I got into the school, there was an issue with financial aid that set my start date back by about nine months. That’s when I started my hair company, The Jade Collection. My dad gave me 1000 dollars to start my company and I haven’t looked back since.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nope. I wish. Lots of bumps in the road actually. First was, me being a first-generation business owner I wasn’t taught anything about running a business. And unfortunately, in school we aren’t taught certain business principles either. We aren’t taught about taxes. We aren’t taught about permits, licensing. None of this. Secondly, my work-life balance is insane. Juggling full-time work, school, and a fluent hair business is no joke. Going to work at 7 AM, getting off going straight to beauty school until ten and staying up until 3 AM fulfilling orders and requests for the company. Waking up and doing it all over again two hours later. My life is non-stop. Lastly, the biggest challenge is the industry I am in. It’s such a clogged industry. Everyone does hair. Everyone does makeup. Etc Etc. One of my hardest tasks as an owner is figuring out ways to separate myself from the rest.

What were you like growing up?
I was pretty outgoing, growing up. Always cool with everyone I come in contact with. I’m always social and friendly. I always want people to feel welcome when they are around me. I was always interested in fashion and the beauty industry. Always dressed in the cutest clothes, playing in makeup. I’m high maintenance to a certain degree. I could still get down and dirty if I have to with no problems.
