Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake St.Pierre.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jake. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been having fun making sounds for as long as I can remember. I grew up 30 minutes outside of Boston in a small town that didn’t seem to offer anything I was looking for. My mom was a great singer and my Dad ripped on guitar. When I would visit him, I would just sit there and play with his guitar for days on end. I was obsessed. As I got older, that blossomed into a passion for songwriting, discovering and learning new tunes, and trying to record my own songs on garage band…I even tried to pursue rapping at one point (LOL).
Fast forward to 2011, I moved to Orlando, FL to study at Full Sail where I received a Bachelors Degree in Recording Arts. In 2014 I graduated from Full Sail and I started at Studio 18 in Orlando, where I lived, worked, studied, and learned my ass off every day for two years. This is where I really got my feet wet in the industry. There I was able to work with and soak up game from artists like Daddy Yankee, Joey Badass, Tyla Yaweh, Niko Is, SKYXXX, Caskey, and many more. At that time, I also started to fall in love with live sound as well. I was the dedicated Front of House Engineer for a local reggae band called Horizen, who took me on my first tour.
In 2016, I left the studio in Orlando and pursued a career in production and freelance audio engineering. I headed west for California and ended up working on a legal cannabis collective as a grower and taking trips back and forth from Humboldt to Los Angeles to visit my bro Tyla and make connections over there. I was originally planning on moving to LA but suddenly I came to the realization that Atlanta was more suited for my vibe,
in 2017, I arrived In Atlanta without many connections and trying to find my way. One of my homies invited me to the studio not too long after I had moved out here to cook up for her project. Through those sessions alone, I have made some awesome friends and gotten to produce on songs with some very talented individuals who inspire me daily such as Jared Scharff, Musik Majors, Nard & B, XL Eagle, Dub tha Prodigy, Natra Average, and so many more.
Shortly after, I got a job as a Sound Tech/Engineer at Apache Cafe and started doing a bunch of AV work which led to me also working for a company that provides audio and communications at Tyler Perry Studios on set for all of the “Love & Hip-Hop Reunion” shoots and “Steve Harvey on Watch”.
In 2018, I started as a Studio Tech at SAE and I now teach a Live Sound class there.
Nowadays, you can usually catch me cooking up at my home studio, drinking a beer or a scotch at The Porter, or floating down the Chattahoochee.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to get to where I am at today has been a roller coaster in so many ways, and it still is. Financially, Emotionally, Mentally. This shit is forever evolving. Every day I am learning how to be a better producer, better engineer, better listener, better friend, and better man. If I could give one piece of advice to avoid a lot of the struggles most producers experience would be to obtain a basic understanding of music business early on in your career. It will help you more than you think!
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I don’t know what sets me apart from others. I just love everyone and try to be the best at being myself. My apple music library is deep af though, I could probably put you on to some crazy records you never knew about.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mom because she raised me as best as she could shout out to you ma!
Connor Smith (owner of Studio 18) for being the first person to believe in my talents. He gave me my first studio job and encouraged me to be myself and gave me a place to grow.
Allison, Iggy, Cupp, Circa, AdamOnTheTrack, Izzy, Q, Dub, EJ, Z Wolfgramm, Domz (TroubleMekkah), Kountdown, Chase, Fliiko, Reej, XL and all my bros from back home in the Boston area (they mean the world to me)
All of these people helped shape me into the person I am today in so many ways.
