Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamel Randall.
Jamel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began the business with the aspirations of simply doing my personal massages and space where I could practice yoga personally. As time progressed, massage clients began asking me to teach them yoga. I’d been through yoga teacher training so I invited them to join me. I enjoyed the music blaring while I practice but I wasn’t sure if others would. Slowly but surely, more people joined my class so I added more to my schedule. The feedback I received was that the music made them feel comfortable with not being perfect. Like they could come without knowing anything about yoga, still gaining a complete class of breath, posture and flow. I saw this as an opportunity to reach more people who may have an interest in the practice of yoga but maybe a bit uneasy about joining a class. This led to me to create a monthly event named “Trap Sundays” this event was intended to be fun, unifying, informative and overall liberating.
The first event in November 2018 brought out 50 new yogis and quickly grew to over 3000 new yogis by 2020. We continued doing these events all over Detroit and even made stops in Chicago, California and Atlanta. Slowly building our own Trap Yoga Community. We then began leading yoga teacher training to put even more boots in the ground as we continue to shine the light of acceptance, mental and physical health. Lastly, this COVID pandemic provided us the chance to create a virtual platform where we now reach people all across the country with yoga classes, workshops and training.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, definitely not smooth. I struggled with not having a flashy space. My studio is an office space that I transformed into a yoga studio by adding flooring, space heaters and the vibes of the community. I struggled with exposure, hidden in the lower level of a professional building full of hairdressers I had to rely on social media and word of mouth to generate attention.
Please tell us about The Trap Yoga & Massage Studio.
We specialize in yoga, meditation, chakra healing and massage. I’m most proud of the impact that we’ve been able to make in so many lives. We expose people to these healing modalities in a cool way.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could start over, I’d journal every day the experiences I faced so that I can appreciate the journey even greater.
