Today we’d like to introduce you to Janetha Middleton.
Janetha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in a small town in rural Charleston, South Carolina as the daughter of a teen mother. My grandparents were and still are instrumental in my life. In 2015 I graduated from Spelman College and decided to make Atlanta my new home. I’ve always been a well dressed plus size woman and after years of encouragement from family and friends decided to launch Gracefully Broken to discuss lifestyle and fashion. My aim is to be a blogger with substance so I go to great lengths to give my audience a look into my “Why?”.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Oh no! I didn’t even get into Spelman the first time I applied. I transferred in my sophomore year. What that taught me was “no” means next opportunity. I take that lesson and apply it to Gracefully Broken in many aspects but especially when reaching out to brands. If they say no the first time, I study the influencers who they say yes to so that I can fine-tune my content to get a yes the next time.
Please tell us about Gracefully Broken.
Gracefully Broken is an Atlanta based plus size fashion and lifestyle blog. My style is unique and versatile. Some days I’m in a preppy brand like Lilly Pulitzer and some days, I’m in a dress with sneakers. My goal is to show that women can be versatile and that regardless of what we’re wearing or our job title, we all deserve respect and happiness. I am extremely proud of the way I have been able to reach women from all walks of life and encourage them to live authentically.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Yes! I’ve had encouragement from friends and even people I have never met who send encouraging messages all the time. My parents have been instrumental in my upbringing and my success. As for my business, I find business tips for influencers from Mattie James and inspiration from Sarah Jakes Roberts.
