Meet Jasmine Hines of Handmade By Jasz in Cascade

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Hines.

Jasmine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
About four years ago, I started exploring how to make my own natural products such as soaps and body butters. I spend hours researching different herbs and looking at YouTube videos. Over the years, I practiced and perfected my craft. I went from making soap for myself and my mother to making soap for profit. Moving forward to this summer, I launched my Etsy store handmadebyjasz. Initially, I started the page to sell my crocheted items. By day I work at a recreation center planning program for the community. I decided to create a program that would allow me to teach members of the community how to make handmade crafts, and the program is called Self-Care with Jas.

Self-Care with Jas is a creative hour where participants make handmade crafts such as candles, soaps, and body butters. Since the first class, I have been receiving excellent reviews about the products that we make in the class. I started sharing pictures of the products that I make, more specifically, the candles, onto my personal Instagram. I began receiving orders immediately for the candles. After seeing the response that the candles received, I shifted my focus to making candles. Since then, I have started an Instagram and Facebook page decided to my candles. My candle business is growing daily. I’ve recently started selling candles wholesale. Making candles is very therapeutic for me.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I did face some obstacles when I first started my business. However I prayed about them, and I practiced my craft and I overcame those obstacles.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Handmade by Jas is a multifaceted business. I not only sell handmade products, but I also teach classes on how to make the same products that I sell. I currently make soaps, candles, body butters, yoni steams, and crocheted items. The product that I am most proud of is my candles. My candles are hand-poured soy wax candles that are made with love and positive vibes. When a customers lights one of my candles the space is filled with a delightful aroma. My soaps, body butters, and yoni steam contain 100% all-natural products, and herbs. Also, my crocheted items provide a stylish way to keep warm during the winter months. I offer private lessons for people that are looking to make their own homemade products.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was very artsy, I’ve always enjoyed doing arts & crafts. My family would always tell me that I was good with my hands. I’ve always been into herbs and using herbs for their healing properties. From a young age, Erykah Badu was my favorite, I’ve always channeled my inner Badu. I’ve always been optimistic, I achieve all of my goals because of my drive and dedication.
