Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Wise, Ph.D.
Jasmine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Recently, I was told that purpose is discovered. I’m learning this more and more each day. I graduated in May of 2017 with a doctorate in Sociology and immediately moved to Atlanta. Literally, I graduated on a Sunday and was in Atlanta the following week. I truly believed I was going to get a job at one of the many colleges or universities in Atlanta and work my way up the ladder to becoming a dean. But instead, I went without full-time employment for a year. I discovered during that time that I could apply the training I received in my Ph.D. program differently.
While in graduate school, I managed several research projects and supervised a staff of both graduate and undergraduate students who worked with me to ensure our research goals were attained. During this time, I learned so much about the human components of “getting things done.” People are people. Recognizing this saying as truth was key for me because it helped me see my natural gift of coaching. I learned I could hold a conversation with anyone about anything, but when I glimpsed someone’s passion, it became a whole different ball game. Whenever someone shared an idea, I found myself listening intentionally and immediately thinking of ways the person could turn this idea into an accomplishable goal. I always imagined how I could help along the way. I realized that I loved helping people reach their goals and that I was great at motivating others. Opening myself up to people-management was just as crucial as being excellent in project management. The self-awareness that came from this was really when things started to change for me.
I started Prosper Projects when I was a part-time employee at a small company. It transformed me. I became someone who enjoyed pushing people to work through their fears and anxieties so they could ultimately accomplish their goals and their dreams. I am what I like to call a Purpose Cultivator and Educator because of this, a consultant – meets counselor – meets teacher, as a natural coach, I desire to help people succeed.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been quite rocky. I have a limited background in business and can sometimes find it hard to navigate. However, like every other thing at Prosper Projects, we figure it out. I mentioned that fears and anxieties could stop people from reaching for their goals. I learned that within myself. I’m usually afraid before I post about a class or write a blog. But, I post anyway. Because, why not? I’m my biggest roadblock. I used to be afraid to reach out, but now I tell everyone about Prosper and what we offer the world.
