Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayla Taylor.
Jayla, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started off designing at the age of 10 from watching my grandmother’s hand sew different things. I would mimic the way she took clothing in and I would do the same to the clothes my mother would buy me that I didn’t like. I didn’t take it seriously until my freshman year of high school, which is when I decided I wanted to go to college for fashion design. From then on out, I started dedicating most of my time to becoming one of the best fashion designers of my generation.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a very hard road thus far, and I don’t expect it to become easier until I get to where I want in my fashion career. I’ve been told, “ who would buy your clothing” and “why is it so revealing, that’s not in anymore” ,and I’ve had SO MANY doors closed and opportunities that I didn’t get because I was told I wasn’t good enough, even though I would stay up late nights and early morning working on my designs. My journey has had a lot of ups and downs, and I’ve learned that anything worth it, never comes easy. I’ve also learned that staying positive and working hard never goes unnoticed.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jayla Taylor – what should we know?
My brand Jayla Taylor, which was started in September of 2018, is a luxury design brand with a focus on evening wear. I am a custom/couture designer, which means that I hand make all of my garments to fit my customers. My proudest moments are when I wear my garments for reactions and to gain clientele, and my garments draw an audience. I love for women to look at my garments and immediate ask where can they get it because I love making women feel and look as beautiful as I do in my own designs. What makes my brand different is the fact that all of my designs are one of a kind and you won’t see more than 4 of a garment ever made.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would say that my family and friends are my biggest supporters. They’ve always encouraged me to keep going when I wanted to give up and they’ve also given me great advice.
