Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaylon Teague.
Hi Jaylon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
This whole journey started off my 11th-grade year in high school. I didn’t necessarily know anything about cameras or how to operate them but I started with using my iPhone. I would record different things around the school and from there I kept learning a lot of things. By my senior year, I saved up enough money to get a camera and was gifted a MacBook for an early graduation gift. I started recording different sports and eventually got one of the photos I took at the football game and it was put into the newspaper. That was my first personal achievement. From then I would stay consistent on learning new things and building more connections with different people. My first freelance videographer job was a production that worked out of East Point, GA. While working along with other creators, they quickly began to acknowledge me being 19. So young and talented and people would always ask where did I go to film school or who taught me everything. I am happy to say that I taught and learned everything on my own just by researching and watching video tutorials on YouTube. Them noticing my age and the ways I learned gave me more motivation to keep going.
Sometime later in 2020, I got hired at Cady Studios. I was working for two months at the time and was promoted to elite photographer. The managers and supervisors really loved my workflow and how I was progressing in such a timely manner. Working there was another way of taking in different ways to operate a business and how to manage the amount of customers we were getting at that time. From every job I try to take as much information or things, I can learn most from and personalize that with my business. Towards 2021 is when I really upgraded my camera gear and really invested into myself once I had enough time to learn and trial over the years. After getting my official gear and everything I needed. My biggest thing was to network. My idea was I have all the gear, I have the knowledge on how to get it done. I just had to find those who were ready to work with me.
By this time, I was consistently shooting music videos. While doing that over the years, I’ve connected with all types of people. My first paid gig out of town was to LA after doing a small studio vlog in Atlanta. My first time meeting and working with celebrities came just from being around the right people and putting myself out there. I would say getting to where I am now worked solely off me, never settling with the quality work I had. I always want a clearer quality and all-around top-notch equipment. Another way would be my networking. Networking is not only just to meet others and create new friends but for those who are in a better position and where I want to get to is like a teaching lesson. Watching others work motivates me and it’s more like a studying moment when I do. Last thing I want to say is, if you don’t take yourself serious then no one else will.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall I appreciate the good and the bad that came with my journey but some of the rough times came when I didn’t understand the process of building a business. I would get frustrated on different things like people not booking with me. Dealing with unprofessional people and the inconsistent income from my business. I had to learn my lesson time after time and it’s still a working process but booking and staying consistent was my biggest struggle.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I currently engage in videography and photography. I direct & edit everything and I mostly specialize in doing music videos for different artists. I would say I’m known for my growth. Everyone saw me create all of this from nothing. My most proud moment would be my first time investing into my business and ordering all my camera gear. When I get equipment and gear it feels like Christmas. The biggest thing that separates me from others would be my knowledge of the business and my humbleness. I’m always the first person to reach out and also the first to ask questions.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I like best that it’s a city of people that are constantly working. It’s all kinds of ways to network and we have some of the biggest production companies, let alone one of the main entertainment cities. I would say the thing I like least is the traffic.
