Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Ivey.
Jennifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a Cincinnati, OH native and an Atlanta transplant. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati with BFA in Theatre Design and Production-Costume Design Technology, I furthered my education in aesthetics at the International School of Skin, Nail Care and Massage Therapy and the Aromahead Institute.
My journey began as a makeup artist in print, commercial, fashion, theater and television, working frequently with the Atlanta Opera and the Atlanta Ballet and as a local artist to touring theatrical productions with I.A.T.S.E. Local #798. It was with this affiliation I became acquainted with Disney’s the Lion King. I was asked to join the touring company as an assistant makeup artist in 2004. My dedication, professionalism and work ethic rewarded me being promoted in 2009 as Hair and Makeup Supervisor. For more than a decade, I toured the country maintaining the standard and excellence in theatrical makeup for one of the most recognized theatrical stage productions in the world. One of my greatest honors was preparing the cast for the annual Kid’s State Dinner hosted by the First Lady Michelle Obama in 2015.
Has it been a smooth road?
In working in theater you have to anticipate situations that may arise when dealing with live media. Often times there were mid-show emergencies and my team and I would need to change a cast member out and get an understudy ready during the show. Never once did the show stop on Hair & Makeup’s watch! Nobody just stops and gets out of the car at a speed bump. You get over it!
Traveling around the world living out of a suitcase for 13 years was quite a challenge. Every day of my life was well planned so I became extremely detail-oriented.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I returned back to Atlanta in 2017 and now work on various productions in television and film.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the fact that Atlanta has such a diverse group of people! The least thing I like is the traffic.
