Meet Jennifer Roach of Jennifer Marie Photography in Gwinnett County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Roach.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was always interested in photography, even as a kid. I was the friend who would bring a disposable camera along to every party or event and take a ton of pictures. One of my favorite things was dropping off the disposable cameras at the pharmacy and getting the pictures back a few days later. Every Christmas, I asked for a new camera. I even did my 5th grade 4-H project on Photography! I didn’t start learning the technical aspects of photography until after our first child was born in 2006. I got a “real camera” and started chasing her around with it, and my knowledge and skill grew from there. I started my photography business, then called Flip Flop Photography, in 2014. I changed my business name to Jennifer Marie Photography just over a year ago at the end of 2017. When I first started out, I didn’t think I wanted any part of wedding photography, and I thought the name Flip Flop Photography was cute (because I always wear flip-flops). But once I did my first wedding, I was hooked! I knew that was where I was supposed to be, so I geared my business toward weddings, and I knew I had to change my name! I’m loving where I am now and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

Has it been a smooth road?
There were definitely some struggles in the beginning. I think I did what a lot of people seem to do now, and I sort of threw myself out there as a photographer before I was really ready and I knew what I was doing, and that got me some rude comments and dirty looks from some professionals who had been in the business for a long time. It was very discouraging at first until I found my tribe of friends in the industry who are supportive and not competitive. I see a lot of new photographers go through this same thing now, and I try to reach out and let them know they need to drown those negative voices out and just keep learning and growing. I’ve also been very lucky to have a very supportive husband who has helped me out immensely with keeping my business going and keeping my head up when I got discouraged.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jennifer Marie Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I think I’m known for capturing real moments and little details of the wedding day to help tell the story of the day. What sets me apart is that I really and truly love weddings and I love being a part of the biggest day of people’s lives. I get emotionally invested in my clients and their love story, so I often am tearing up behind the camera. I’m drawn to the moments that many people may miss, but I notice them and capture them for my couples.

I also recently started planning and hosting a series of styled shoots of Disney themed weddings. I have done weddings inspired by Beauty and the Beast, Tangled, and Frozen. I have many more planned for the future! Those are a lot of fun and I really enjoy coming together with other local creatives to make something fun and unique. I’m very proud of the fact that all three of these shoots have been published by popular publications, including PopSugar.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love living in Atlanta! It’s such a vibrant and eclectic city. There are some truly amazing places here. The traffic is the worst part, of course. I’m sure everyone says that!
