Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Merelus.
Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey as an entrepreneur started in 2008 when I received a photoshop disk from my younger brother. From then, I started my graphic design business. In 2012, I started my magazine company with my wife ‘ Women and Shoes Magazine’ and in 2016, I added on my branding business, ‘The Haitian Mogul’. All of my businesses began because I have a passion for art, empowering women and helping businesses grow – respectively. Initially, I had a need to get away from the regular 9-5 because it was not fulfilling and most of the time I felt ‘overworked and underpaid’ and I wanted to change that! So, here I am.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I have had to overcome several obstacles including making the leap to work for myself full-time without having a part-time to pay the bills. Some years were better than others in that aspect. Nonetheless, I took each ‘supposed’ failure and learned from it to do better and keep trying. I also had to learn how to adapt to the many changes especially when it came to attract customers using social networks but now, I teach business owners how to do it themselves for their company. Ultimately, as long as you have a plan and don’t take the misses too hard you can achieve anything!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My graphic design company, Msjaiinc Designs specializes in website development, simple graphics like flyers, logos and album covers and flash animation. I am known for my websites and animations. What sets my company apart from others, is the variety that I offer including combining certain services with my other companies, Women and Shoes Magazine for publishing and The Haitian Mogul for marketing.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I do feel that Atlanta is a good place for a business like mine. There are a lot of entertainment industry individuals and companies that I can network and work with. Most of my clients are from this city and with all of the new talent and film industries coming in there will also be more people to connect with on any level of my companies.
If someone wanted to start working down here they sure can and will see much success! The environment is welcoming and you have room to grow and meet a variety of amazing people between the events and other upcomers in the city.
