Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn McCants.
Jocelyn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been drawn to photography; and a few years ago, I started exploring that “hobby” with a good friend. Since then, I’ve grown so much in my craft by seriously investing in education and being out in the field. And as a result, the importance of beautifully captured pictures has really taken on a new meaning in my life. As you get older, you realize that the things that last are the memories. The feelings and pictures serve as a reminder of those special moments. I love that feeling when you are looking at old pictures and it transports you back to that time. I love that I get to help capture those reminders in a very powerful, emotional way for other people.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
If you ask any business owner if it’s been a smooth road, you will get a chuckle. The creative side of photography has been a smooth, natural process. The business side of running a photography business has held some challenges. One of the things I love most about photography, is that it allows everyone to be an artist. So identifying the people with whom my photography style connects with has been my biggest challenge. I’m working to overcome that by continuing to showcase my work in a variety of avenues. The important thing is to meet every challenge with a perspective of how can this be solved vs if it can be solved.
At First Sight by JM – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Photography is such a broad field. I specialize in engagement, wedding, maternity, personal portraits, event, content creation sessions, branding/ headshot and travel photography. I choose to only shoot my passion, and that’s reflected in both my work and my interaction with my clients. I’m just as excited they are for the photo session!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Great question! Success can be defined in so many ways. I would say, success in regards to photography, would combine my two loves: travel and photography on a full-time basis. I’ve recently had the opportunity to visit South Africa and Egypt with New Travel Peeps, a travel group based out of Dallas. And both of those trips allowed me the opportunity to capture some amazing shots which I sell as prints and also to photograph the group and help tell the story of our trip.
