Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel NR Powell.
Hi Joel NR Powell, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As the creator of the NR Entertainment brand, the movement started with the sound system culture of Reggae music. Born in a Jamaican and Trinidadian household; I gravitated to music through my Dad’s record collection. It’s what kept me away from getting involved in the streets and a life of crime. Once you are connected to music, it’s impossible to pull yourself away from it. I stuck with it because I fell in love and my passion has never left. Through music, I was able to create: Ninja Ryders Sound Professional Disc Jockey Service, The Ultimate Empowerment Package: Black Empowerment & Minority Issues the book, Empowerment Through Awareness the film & 7 Issues EP soundtrack, NR City EP, 1996 Da Breakthru EP and a host of other projects.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge that I’ve faced is simple. The sad fact is that people have sight but they lack vision. Being in the arts & entertainment industry. People will often only notice you when your on top. The criticism is endless when you’re struggling and the compliments are endless when your on top. The key is to know who is really for you and who is really against you. Always pay attention to the signs and remember to trust your gut instinct.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a DJ, Recording Artist, Author & Entrepreneur, my greatest career accomplishment is that I was able to attain great heights through an organic push. I’ve never had a manager, but yet I am still able to release over 200 mixtapes under my Ninja Ryders Sound imprint. Strictly For Lovers, Itz Official, Dancehall Jumpoff, When Dance Did Nice, Gospel Favourites, Cultural Mystic, Soca Xplosion, Alborosie & Friends Mixtape and a host of others. I am the only recording artist to ever release a book, film and music project under his own imprint. I focus my attention on not just releasing projects but releasing projects that will create an impact that will always stand the test of time.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Determined, driven and always thinking. I used to walk around with a cassette recorder literally everywhere I went. Music is my life. I can recall when I was in the first grade I brought “Bob Marley & The Wailers Live” the LP to school for show and tell. I had my whole class dancing to “Trenchtown Rock”.
