Today we’d like to introduce you to John Carroll DeShazier.
Thanks for sharing your story with us John. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a Media Communication graduate of Full Sail University. Before I started at Full Sail, I would watch YouTube videos on how to create film such as the channel “Film Riot,” which endorsed Full Sail University. I’ve always enjoyed television and movies because the content would take me to places that I would most likely never see. The characters and people that filmmakers create have always captured my attention. Since a little kid, I wish I could be in movies but I’m a little too shy to be in front of the camera so I decided I want to make the movies and film. I attended Full Sail because I wanted to know more about the entertainment industry.
Even before starting at Full Sail University, I never could find people that were interested in filmmaking as much as I was here in the town where I live. After graduating though, I decided to try harder to find people that had the same interest as I do and I did in my very good friend Chris Hall who I met on the set of another film. He gave me a comfort and the confidence in the ability by asking me to be the cinematographer for his short film “This Day Sucks.” I was nervous because I didn’t want to screw up his film but how wrong was I because he loved the footage I captured.
That film “This Day Sucks” directed by Chris Hall, led me to pay homage to my friend and the film he allowed me help become crew on. So I decided to create a prequel to that film titled “Low Heat,” which I’ve asked Chris to become co-writer. I’ve also incorporated people that I know that have different talents into helping crew on sets. We’re all growing and becoming better as we go along with each new film.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say that there are some bumps in the road with personalities, funding, scheduling, weather and the biggest of all are finding locations to film at. All of those things aren’t as bad as my own thoughts. One of the struggles I tend to have is overthinking. I would beat myself up mentally over things that haven’t happened yet.
Avizon Pictures – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company’s name is Avizon Pictures. It specializes in filmmaking. The opener for my films has a Never-Never Land theme to it because I feel like Peter Pan, the kid that never grew up. Avizon is known for taking those who has an interest in filmmaking but doesn’t know where to go and giving them the confidence to join the entertainment industry. I’m proud to have taken my son’s name, which is Zavion, and create Avizon Pictures out of it. Everyone can have the best equipment but my competitive spirit sets me apart from others.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is being able to love what you’re doing and being paid decent enough to live off of. I don’t have to become super-rich but if I’m doing what I love to do and make enough to live off of that then that is success to me.
