Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Clark.
Joseph, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am Joseph Clark, also known as Therealjoeclark. I am an artist from Birmingham, Alabama. I grew up in a family where music was everything. Aunts and cousins played instruments in the band, we sung in the choir, mom directed the choir from time to time, dancing with my cousins and his friends in South Hampton Pratt City, and our family events were full of music and dancing. I always loved music. LL Cool J made me want to rap, but for some reason, I thought you had to be a certain age to rap. When I first heard Chris Cross that was when I knew that I could do this rap thing as a young kid! Things didn’t fly until I met my friend and brother Isaac “G.I Magus” Jones at More than Conquerors Faith Church. That is where it all started! Our Pastor Steve Green gave us the platform to rap as a youth and there we formed a dope group called Battle CATS with several of our brothers and friends. As time passed, we Solidified the group with two other members Bryan “Supreme Euphony” Wilson and “Rico “Dean Priest” McDavid. As life continued, we collectively put out one album and five mixtapes. We all branched out to do our solo thing and continued to do damage. I have put out three mixtapes as a solo artist with my latest album titled “Book of Joseph,” which is on all major music platforms! I am continuing my solo career with plans on building my brand and growing as an artist/producer.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The major challenges for me have been a single parent with aspirations of being an artist. Family is always first, but when you put the State into your business, they will make sure you put your Family first. So that leads to a lack of funds to invest in your career but God has always made a way. I stayed persistent and used what I had which made me even more creative. It’s kind of like what Kanye said: “I’m trying to right my wrongs/ but it’s funny. Them same wrongs helped me write this song”. My challenges are my inspiration to create! Another challenge has been the fact that I do positive music. As a group and as a solo artist it always felt like We had to go harder than hard with our lyrics, that have no negativity, to even be considered dope amongst subpar, lackluster artist that spew half-ass lyrics but are loved because they sound just like the latest popular mainstream artists at the time. It’s been plenty of times that we had been overlooked because of that. But in the same breathe, I am thankful for those challenges because it produced the confidence, skill, and the ability to out rap and out write any artist. Challenges only make us stronger.
Please tell us about your work.
My business is Therealjoeclarkbrand which consists of me as a solo artist, songwriting, creative consulting, and beat production. I specialize in songwriting and known to create catchy hooks and create the dope album and song concepts! I truly enjoy what I do. What sets me apart is that I can listen to an artist’s ideas. Capture them, and create something as if I was that artist and experienced the same feelings that the artist explained.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think the quality that is most important to my success is that even though I am very introverted, I know how to turn my shyness off and turn into an outgoing artist. I don’t meet any strangers and because I grew up around different cultures, I can talk to anybody and connect with them.
