Meet Justin Wilkins of Callmesense in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Wilkins.

Justin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember.. I started out as a child, learning from how-to-draw books and re-illustrating cartoon characters. Art has always been a passion of mines, but it wasn’t until 3 years ago that I decided to pursue a career in it. In fact, for 8 years I had stopped drawing altogether as if I had never knew art.

Becoming reacquainted with art and the joy it brings me was one of the most memorable moments of my life. Though I have never taken a single art class, with the exception of mandatory grade school classes, this field is undoubtedly something that I find fulfilling and worthwhile. At the age of 25, I am now an Art Instructor for the Boys&Girls Club, helping out the youth and teaching them what I know.

In addition, I started my own business 3 years ago and I currently participate in 3-5 art shows a month in the Atlanta area. You can find me vending, displaying and selling my artwork at various locations. It is my dream to be able to continue to inspire, motivate, and spread love through my passion!

Has it been a smooth road?
Oh man.. I wish the road was smooth, but the truth is it is a journey of trial and error.

Failure after failure until you get it right. Throughout my short journey, I have had many roadblocks and trials. For instance, learning about different events and venues to showcase and sell my work proved to take some time. It’s not only finding about opportunities but the right opportunities.

To this day it is still a struggle and I have a long way to go. However, with determination, diligence, and optimism I am sure that my goals and dreams will come to fruition. The most important key to remember is to never give up.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Callmesense – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My artist name is Callmesense. I work with a number of mediums, including Copic Markers and acrylic paint. Some people know me from my custom work involving but not limited to; custom paintings, cover art, hats, sneakers, and t-shirts/sweaters. I would say that my style is heavily influenced by Eastern Asian culture and I believe that reflects in my artwork.

I am most proud of starting my business because there was a time where I did not consider that art could be my profession. Now it brings me happiness to know that I can have a career doing something that I love. What sets me apart from other artists is my diversity with combining different elements of art until I have created something that has never been seen before.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love best about Atlanta is its culture. Atlanta is a melting pot of many different ethnicities, with each segment adding its own flavor into the mix. What I like least about the city is it’s traffic, hands down.
