Today we’d like to introduce you to Kadeem Johnson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Queens, New York until moving to South Florida as a young boy. In Florida, I loved to gaze at the sky and sunbath at the beach. As a child, you could only imagine how much I loved watching cartoons films and playing video games. When I was ten years old, I moved to Conyers, Georgia. My mom would buy me disposable cameras to use on field trips. During my senior year of high school, I was introduced to a DSLR camera for the first time, the Canon Rebel T3i. I mainly used it to take pictures of my outfits for Instagram. I purchased my very own DSLR camera in 2016 where I truly began my photography journey. A friend of mine downloaded photoshop on my laptop, and it opened a whole new side of photography I’d yet to explore. While watching videos on how to edit photos, I thought there was a “perfect” way to edit, but I soon realized I was only crushing my creativity. I noticed the photos which spoke to me were those that told a story. I wanted my photographs to have an impression on people, so I began working on my style. During that time of experimentation, I began to train my eye by taking photos of anything that caught my attention. I would stop, pull out my phone, and snap the shot! This included: intriguing angles, lovely clouds in the sky, breathtaking moments, a strange sign illuminating a street, etc. I did this with my iPhone exclusively for a year straight without picking up my DSLR. I eventually trained my eye while also finding my editing style. I found a way to create painting like photos to where some may not believe it to be a photo at all. I fused my love for cinema and animation to create images that seem to come from a dream.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Initially, I found it challenging creating my own style because many found my work difficult to understand. At first, I would find myself interpreting my work to people. The colors in my photographs were too intense from the saturation. By taking some time for myself, I was able to overcome that obstacle and rejuvenate my style.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a visual artist and fashion stylist. Currently I am working on fusing my gifts to create wearable art. The goal is to create unique visual spectacles on fashionable timeless pieces.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I view risk as necessary for any creative. The greater the risk, the greater the reward to be gained. I have taken many risks, and each one of them has made me into the man I am today. If it is on your heart to create, make it happen.
